You should check it with your antivirus program to make sure it is not infected- that might help, if it is, by cleaning the virus.
If it still reads, you could try this, but as its a usb, I am not sure it will-Its free

If the drive is not encrypted, you might want to try it in another computer first. There is an open source program called PhotoRec that can recover quite a few files from a flash drive. Be sure to read the Step by Step instructions.

Strange, dates look all messed up but file sizes may be ok. Encryption of some sort it may be.

I see there's an Iomega external drive attached; many ext. drives come preloaded with auto-installing software, sometimes that includes encryption. I wonder if that could be the cause of this?

You could try shutting down, disconnecting the flash and Iomega drives and reboot into Safe Mode, insert the flash drive and see if anything changes.

I wouldn't like to attempt anything on this drive until we have a reasonably clear notion of what the root cause is.

So I ran an "Error-checking" via the windows GUI and tried a few file recovery solutions but to no avail. I went back to check the drive via the windows GUI again and now there aren't even folders anymore, just file's with the original folder names and only 4 KB big. See screen shot.
So is my data gone forever?

Have you tried Recuva (selecting all files using the Deep Scan option). Might be worth a try. Make sure if anything valuable is found that you try to recover it to your C: drive not the flash drive so as not to overwrite the file.

Looks like chkdsk 'fixed' it :(, that's the problem with using tools before gathering enough data to make a reasonably accurate guess on which type of tools to try. Look in the Application log in Windows Management, there should be the chkdsk scan results in there somewhere, could you paste them up please?

Sorry I was just desperate and was trying everything... :(
Can you tell me where to find that log?
I can't seem to find the chkdsk log in my event viewer...

If you'd like to connect to my pc via RealVNC or Teamviewer let me know and I'll pm you details...

Right-click (My) Computer and click Manage then (after ok'ing the UAC prompt) navigate to System Tools > Event viewer > Windows logs and click on Application. You can then save this evt file to your Desktop (Save all events as ... App.evt, for instance), zip it and attach it to your next post please and I'll try to locate and make sense of it.
