If I sound desperate refer to #3 for explanation. PEASE HELP ME!!!

    This is not a problem.

Is Windows recognizing the flash drive when you connect it to the computer?

This shold not be a problem at all trucker !! hell I used to have one partition FAT 32 and the other NTFS on the same hdd.

Check the follwing and reply so that we can help ya better.

    # after u plug in the USB drive, do you see a pop up notification (indicating that the system has recognized a flash drive or somethin like that)

    # after you plug in the USB drive press the following keys:

press and hold the windows key on your keyboard and press E, this opens the windows explorer, you should see your USB drives as one of the drives here.

    hope this helps

Select the files or folders by clicking on them once. Then press ctrl+c. This is a keyboard shortcut to copy what is selected. Next, navigate to where the files or folders should be, and press ctrl+v. That is a keyboard shortcut to paste.

The files should then copy to the new location.

To select more than one file or folder at a time for copying, hold down the ctrl key while you click on multiple files or folders.

Just FYI, normally the copy and paste commands, and others, are found by clicking edit. The keyboard shortcuts are faster to use though.

Hope this helps get you out of hot water.

Try dragging the folder to your desktop...then see if it will open.

For some reason when I do this it tries to open with power dvd, obviously that won`t work . How can I change this and which would be best to use?

Right click and choose "open with" ...choose the program ...I wonder exactly what all you put into this folder? It should just open to show what is in it. Unless you saved it in some different extension. Can you open the folder in the flash drive?

  13. usafveteran

    usafveteran MajorGeek

Double click on that folder. It should open so you can see the files contained therein. This reference may help: http://cit.information.unl.edu/tips/filemgt.htm you understand how to use Explorer to copy/move files. A basic book, or perhaps a video, on Windows from a local library would also be well worth the time.

Just today we were having something similar happen when we were trying to get an AVG install file off of my flash drive. If we double clicked my flash drive it would come up with an "open with" box. Don't know why, but it did.

Instead of double clicking on the folder, right click on it and choose explore.

That's a fine suggestion. However, I see no indication yet that he's tried double clicking, which should work fine in this case. If not, then your way is an alternative.

Sorry, I guess I read his post wrong. I was under the impression that when he tried to open the folder, which I assumed he tried to do by double clicking on it like normal, it tried to open in Power DVD. I guess I just had a lot on my mind at the time and didn't pay close enough attention to who was saying what and what exactly was being said. Sorry.

Thats correct,it kept trying to open with power dvd. When I try to use windows explorer it tells me it`s not a valid file of sys 32 or something to that effect.

  18. truckerpups

    truckerpups Private E-2

IN fact I just tried it again, reults; C:\Documents And Setting\USM2IMG.Dat is not a valid Win32 application. What ever that means, is there not another way around this problem?

What exactly are you doing when that error message pops up?

And you did try right clicking and selecting explore?

Right click on the flash drive, click explore, then right click on the folder, then click explore?

And you say that when you try to drag and drop the folder to your desktop Power DVD runs?

How did you copy the files to the flash drive?

  20. truckerpups

    truckerpups Private E-2

When I bring up the flash left click, open with, select windows explorer the error E:\USMT2I is not a valid Win32 app. When I try it as you said Nero fires up and says it can undrstand the format. I downloaded everythig to the flash using the files and settings transfer wizard.

In fact I just noticed the file in question has the Nero insignia on it , it used to be dvd, this is confusing hell out of me ! I don`t want to give up as I`m sure there is a way to accomplish what I`m after!!

Ok, I've never transfered using the transfer files and settings wizard, but you may have to do some sort of import using that wizard.

    Have you tried that?

I suggest you read through this article. Should help you.

Yes I tried transfer wizard and everything went great guns untill I went write it to cd and no matter what disk I put in it told it was full or already had been used and refused to go any further, so I don`t know whats up with that as they are all rewritable. Any idea as to what`s causing this?, could it be a setting?, if so where?

I tried the File Wizard for this post. It only works one way--it copies over all your settings and files at once to your new computer with no way to choose individual files.

If you have room on your new install HD copy the USM2IMG.Dat file from USB to HD and start the Wizard. On the Window that asks for the location of files browse to the USM2IMG.Dat file you copied. The Wizard should start.

NB. It may not work since you went from SP2 to SP3. But you will just be working from a copy of the file for safety.

I would try sach2's suggestion... I'm not familiar with XP very much(pretty much jumped from 98 to Vista), and definitely not the with Files and settings transfer wizard.

Seems to me, though, like there wouldn't be any need for a rewritable disk, or any disk other than your hard drive. All you're wanting to do is copy the files from the flash drive to your new system... Maybe you could find a reputable person to have a remote assistance type session with.

The most common unzipping program is WinZip
    http://winzip.com

There are also open source unzipping utilities, such as:
    http://uberdownloads.com/7-zipb.html

WinZip is not a free program but it allows you to "evaluate" it.
The open source programs are of course freeware.

Once you unzip the files look for the exe (executable) file and double click on it.
This will almost always load the driver.
If there are no exe files, unzip the file into a folder and then go to you Device Manager
    Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware
    find the device
double click on it and select the Driver tab
Install the driver (you will have to indicate where you unzipped the files)

Ok, thanx again guy`s got past those hurdle`s! My newest thing is when I try to write to cd or dvd it most of the time tells me there is no disk in the drive or the disk already has data on it and refuses to go any further, I`ve tried many different disks and several times to no avail. To me it seems the machine doesn`t recognize the drive as part of the system, although it shows drive "D" when you look in my computer. Do I have something not set properly? Some ideas please!!!

    1. Make sure it's a burner.
    2. Right click my computer, go to device manager, and make sure that nothing shows an error.
    3. Make sure that the disk you are using is a blank disk or an RW disk.

If you've already done that then let me know.

Uh, truckerpups, I think you should start a new thread for this question. It's a different topic than your topic here.
