I'm about ready to go through an upgrade, and I've been reading a lot about the ability of the 6950 to unlock to 6970, which could save me close to $100. However, none of the places I've looked have mentioned anything like what model numbers or revisions are flashable, and I'm a little worried that this has been going on long enough for AMD to catch it and physically disable the ability to flash. Can anyone tell me if one bought now would still be unlockable, or how to be sure I get one that is?

All of the 6950's (2GB Versions) are flashable, just pick the cheapest one from a retailer you trust.

If you want a guide just ask.

Sorry to jump into this thread, but I wonder if the 6850's are fllashable to 6870's. Any idea?

Thanks burrell. I guess the performance hit won't kill me if AMD has physically severed the shaders before i get mine. Or i'll return it and eat the restocking fee. For the first time in my life I'm not cash strapped :)

abekl, I have not heard of that ability for the 6850. doesn't mean no though, try a little time on google and hardware sites.
