    Hi,
My machine has never run better except: When XP has loaded and 'my setting' are loading, the screen is fine for a couple of seconds, all my desktop icons are showing and then it goes blank, shows desktop again but not completely, blanks out again and does this about 4 or 5 times until it settles down. It's as if there is something changing the screen res or something. Can anyone help, please?:confused

That sounds like your graphics drivers are being reloaded at each boot, can you check your System logs (right-click My Computer > Manage > Event Viewer > System) for any graphics-related events after each boot please?

    Thanks Satrow,

Quite frankly I don't know what I'm looking at! I have exported the list to the attached notepad file, if you would be kind enough to explain...

Ok, but I couldn't import that version into my Event log viewer :( said it was corrupt.

Could you export your System log and save it as an .evt file please (that should be the default anyway) then upload it in a zip file? That should make it much easier to read :)

I just came from an XP machine, you need to right-click on the System folder within Management, Event Viewer and choose "Save as" or "Save all events as", it should give *.evt as the default.

The evt file is, I think, xml-based, much easier to make sense of if I can import it into my Event Viewer :), txt is hard work and I'm not sure if an import into Excel would make it any easier.

    We'll try again tomorrow.

Good Morning, I have attached a 7zip file of my system evt file (BRIANPCEVT.7z), I hope it will arrive!

It would if you set 7zip to save it as a .zip not the default .7z ^^

Here goes, this file is a tab delimited notepad file but it opens with Excel

Please try saving it as .evt, anything else is just a lot of text = very hard to manipulate.

Thanks, I have managed to save the event log as BRIANPCEVENTLOG.evt and have zipped it down to a reasonable size...and here it is, incidentally you are teaching me to go where i have never ventured before!!

I attach another .evt file of my system event viewer. Can you access this one, please?

Ok, I see nothing in the way of errors or warnings there that would have any effect upon the display that I'm aware of.

There are some recurring errors that need checking out. 2 drivers that aren't being loaded and some errors reported with 2 of your hard drives/partitions, you should look into these.
The first seems to belong to Lavalys (AdAware?), maybe a reinstall would fix it.

The second is, I think, Asus software, maybe a reinstall would fix this too (I've read that this software must be installed to the default location or this error will occur - badly written software).

The latter 2 errors mean you need to check all your drives/partitions for errors.

    Hello Satrow and thanks,
ASInsHelp? Don't recognise this one. I used to have an ASUS motherboard with 'Cool 'n Quiet' installed, but I now have a 'Gigabite' M/board. I'll have a look and see if anything is left of ASUS. I assume it will be OK to remove?? When you say check drived for errors, do I use dskchk?

I removed Adaware some time ago.

    Thanks again

Yes, any ASUS software should be safe to remove, afterwards, run the CCleaner Registry scanner to try to remove any residue.

You can check in Device Manager (> View > Show hidden devices) > Non-Plug and PlayDrivers to see if the ASInsHelp is still trying to load, if it is, you can uninstall it from there - NB., you must reboot when prompted. The Lbd driver may be there too, if it is, use the same method to remove it.

Yes, you can use the Properties sheet of the HDD to set a chkdsk to run on the next boot.

    Hello again,
I have cleared out all ASUS references and Adaware. I am still getting 3 or 4 blank screens during my settings installation, and one of these looks like invrese video. I have attached a zipped evt file of my startup yesterday morning before doing anything else. Can you see any difference?
    Thanks,
    tamarbri
