floppy drive problem

hello,

I am new here and i just want ask for some help. what could be the reason of the floppy drive showing erro that when you insert a floppy disk, it will say that the disk is not formatted, buti it opens on other computer. your help will be appreciated.

 

Well first welcome to MG.

The reason that a floppy may not work in one PC but can work in another is due to the alignment of the read heads on the drive. If the read heads on the non-reading PC are slightly out of alignment you may well get the error you describe. I would try the particular floppy in more than one other PC if you can. If it reads in those then it is highly likely the original drive is at fault.

The other thing it can be due to of course is a dodgy floppy disk.

Actually, it is a computer shop with 9 pc's and 8 of them have this problem and the only remaining that is working is the one on the server but my sister just called me and she said that the server floppy drive went the same as the other 8 did. Do you think a virus has got to do with this? Thank you. Your help is highly appreciated.

It seems unlikely that a virus has anything to do with it. If the disk failed in now all of your computers' drives, it is more than likely the disk. Do you have any other floppy disks you can try? It may be helpful to get some floppy disks and try them. If new floppys fail, then you can begin to look at the drives. However, it is very unlikely that 8 pc's have bad floppy drives. More likely a bad disk. Floppys are fairly fragile and those types of strange failures are fairly common place. Good luck.
