floppy problem

I have a 3 1/2 floppy that was last used in July 06. When I insert the disk and go to the open A drive, all of the Word files are shown. When I click to open a file, all I get is noise...dut..dut..dut..dut. Then Word shows as not responding and I end task, but the drive still keeps making noise and I have to open the drive and take the disk out to get it to stop. No problem with other floppies....I think it is a disk problem, but I don't know what to do to access the information.
