    Hi.
    This is baffling me:
New drive - enabled in Bios - visible in explorer. Device manager properties says it is functioning correctly. Driver is ms flpydsk.sys. Light is on drive. Left clicking on Drive A: in explorer or right clicking to format disc gives same message: "Please insert a Disc into drive A:"
(I've tried several discs with same result)
    Sys: Asus P5Q Pro
    Win XP SP2
    What am I missing here?
    Thanks!

If you mean the drive light is always on, this is an indication that the data cable is on backwards. ie; (Cable) Pin 1 on motherboard is not on Pin 1 on the floppy. Ensure the cable is on correctly, motherboard Pin 1 to floppy Pin 1.

Oh Dan, Thank you so much for replying. It has been 4 days and I didn't think anyone was going to respond. I am amazed that the cable would go on incorrectly, I assumed they were keyed.

    Thanks again

    I very much appreciate it!:)

Cables generally are keyed. But there are a few which will attach either way.

    Was that the problem?

    Hi Robert,

The guys are 100% correct. Also, if you put a disk in the drive while the cable is reversed and try to access it the disk is usually damaged. A boot disk will no longer boot and the data may be damaged. The drive is not likely to be harmed.

    Good Luck, Jim

Yes it was. None of the disks were damaged during the attempt to read them. The motherboard end was keyed, the drive end of the cable was not.

    Thanks again! I appreciate it.
