This is a question where a glitch has to have occured because my laptop has a password protected admin acct with a folder containing data. When I switch to guest or switch users the folder is not visible which is correct.

The desktop should be the same but when I go to guest or switch users it shows my private data folder in the pass word protected acct.

How can I reset this to its Win 7 default? I have tried Acronis, systsem restore.

The important folder contains several Word docs so I wonder if it is a n Office issue.

Permissions are something I have no idea about but the difference between the two pcs and the fact that this desktop used to "hide" the folder in the guest acct makesme think it is a glitch which needs fixing.
Please try to help and thank you

Maybe the folder has been shared when setting up your home network. Right click the folder and check the Share setting.

On the laptop which works I clicked properties>sharing and it is \\LAP\users\us\documents\critical notes 6/06/12

But on the faulty desktop it is
    \\DESK\Users\Public\Documents\critical notes 6-06-12

So it seems you have found the problem.
How do I change the path?

It's just not a sound way of working peter to keep two active copies of the same files/folders on separate computers or user accounts. I suggest you delete the one on the PC and set the sharing permissions on the laptop so that the PC can see it and, if required, write to it. You can use the 'map network drive' feature on the PC for that, allocating a drive letter on the PC to the folder on the laptop.

    >>My wife and I use this folder on our respective pcs sso we each need to refer to that folder and she is less techy than I.

I went to libraries, rt clicked documents, and properties and moved the check mark from public to us as the fuctional laptop is constructed.
Should I return it or leave it?
Why could I use the guest and admin before and it changed whereby the folder sems joined?

I am willing to cooperate but don't want to get in over my head more than I am now.

The method I suggested is very simple and is the correct way to work, however....

If it's now behaving as you want it to then leave it.
Simply because the Public folder is just that - open to everyone.

I will try to learn what you have suggested as I respect all advice. For now I am glad to report thatchanging the path has corrected the problem.
    Thank you sir.

I'm puzzled as to why this important folder has been set up under the Admin account rather than in your user account? The Admin account is normally hidden, it should not be left open, and neither should the Guest account come to that. You password protected user account offers the best security for your files peter.

    >>I think my misuse of terms due to lack of experience has caused some problems in communication.
To begin with, I have to enter a password . Then I click on start, then documents, that is where I see my folder. It contains notes regarding the pc only but nothing of a sensitive nature. All the sensitive information is in removable media.
Point being, that is where the folder is and I don't know the name of the location.
No one can access this folder unless they know the password. Once you type in the pasword, you can then click on documets and see the folder. No guest can do this as they have to kow the passsword. There is a guest picture where you can access the pc except for Documents and personal things.
I think there was some semantic confusion.

That sounds fine peter. It was your reference to the Admin account that concerned me, as it's a very powerful user account with pretty well free access and power to change any settings. It's best kept hidden.
