After a complete re-format i am setting up my i7 for folding and would like an idiots guide how to do it correctly this time as i feel i did not have right earlier.

Hey BILL, what guide did you use previously?
The Stanford guide is pretty self explanatory. The main points to remember are to use a Windows account that is passworded and use the key from Stanford in your configuration of the client.
I would just create a new folder on your C Drive (call it FAH) to be the main difference from Stanford and put the client there. It will work either way from the new folder or the default location in the Users folder.
Also, be sure and replace the executable with the new version at the bottom of the page before you configure the client. You should use the -smp -verbosity 9 and -bigadv flags for your set up to get the most points.
Other than that it's pretty easy.

Thanks for the input ibmest but i trashed my PC a couple of days ago and lost everything except my external HDD all the others were on raid:-o i lost all the memory aids that i had (i have a memory retention problem due to years of heavy meds) so i do not know which guide i used.

I am like a virgin folder again and will have to re-build it all again.

OK, you need the 6.30 client, last on this page and here is the guide @ Stanford. 'Do not' add the '-bigadv' flag as LBMEST mentioned as he doesn't know that you don't OC nor run 24/7 to be able to make the deadline. Do have '-advmethods' specified. Fold on!

The only reason i do not run 24/7 is that we live in an appartment and my wife who is a light sleeper says that the noise is too much,

    thanks guys for the help.

log file needed for SMP client posted, also I would use the switch(s) typed in inserted as -smp -verbosity 9.
This newer version of the smp client does not from my experience need the 8 added as this client will use all available cores, but I have heard of using -smp 7 to allow a free core to be used for GPU folding client(s)
sounds like a configuration situation. :confused

a suggestion:have someone you trust to do it remotely using teamviewer (setting up the SMP client)
I assist people I have worked on their computer before or know using this program.
Just remember to run (right click program used) as administrator if on vista/win7.

needs to be configured using -smp -configonly -verbosity 9 first thing then run thereafter from my experience.

not all my doing, learned a lot (the basic understanding) from augie and lbmest plus read/researched the official Folding@home forum and you are welcome.

also remember to remove the switch -configonly as this is used once to setup your client. (or at a later time to re-configure your client)

I'm not real sure, but I believe you will do no less than 10,000 points per day on 8 cores at first (probably more),then once the required 10 WU's are counted and you have your passkey added when you configured your smp client should double or better.

I fold my smp client as you do without the -bigadv flag since I use the AMD Athlon x2 64 4200+ overclocked 100MHz which is not capable to finish those type WU's in the time alloted.

were it not for this newer version smp client I would be running the classic cpu client x 2 as the previous version of the smp client was to much to deal with on this side of the monitor.

    fold on

That's great BILL. Glad to see you got it sorted.

    Agree.:major

You have done a great job in picking up the process noprob. Don't sell yourself short.

Now we just have to wonder why we love to see that CPU at 100% when there are so many people in the Software/Hardware forums complaining about that very problem.;):-D

I believe our appreciation for 100% utilization of our cpu or gpu processes is not the same as the members/end users in the forums stated.

The reason being is the idle cycles of our processors are not idle which results in the love as in the forums previously mentioned their systems are not chilling out on whatever they do not realize is running be in the foreground or not seen. (services not truly needed, comes to mind) to name one instance of no love. :major

It is very frustrating not being able to hold things in memory but with the help of you guys we got the job done.

I learned a very hard lesson with all this and that is DO NOT FORMAT A DRIVE IN RAID I lost all my aid memoirs that were stored on a HDD in the raid:-o i also have two thick books that have solutions to problems in them but there was nothing about folding (until now).

thanks again guys for your help and patience.

I too as I progressively get older realize that my memory retention is lacking, not as good as could be. (one example are small things like forgetting to put the coffee pot back under when making a fresh pot) frustrating but accepting this issue doing the best I am able to do and going forward with love, hope and faith helps very much.

as to the format in raid I suspect there are software programs that may recover said formatted drive data, but best if left alone (no more writes to the raid formatted drive) until the recovery software is allowed to do it's job.

    fold on

    and

    Happy Autumn

The memory thing with me is a medical issue (plus age) i had a bad road accident some years ago and since then it has been a lot of operations to put metal splints in variouse parts of my body (hence the bionic belgian) so i have been on some heavy meds.

The format problem was my own fault but luckily i have been able to recover some of the data and all my programs were on backup (external)

And once again i say thank you all for the help.

Let this be a lesson to everybody!!!! Please do a back-up like Bill did, especially for family photos or important documents immediately! I have several e-mail accounts and that's my cheap form of back-up.:) It's not if a HDD drive will fail but when.;)
