for major geeks from the UK or Ireland: (you get something wierd stuck in your head and it drives ya nuts!) I had a friend from Ireland who called things by slightly different names, I remember she called a grilled cheese sandwich a toasted cheese, but I can't recall what she called an egg salad (minced egg, mayo, etc) does anyone know, because I can't rest till I find out (its what I had for supper...) All I can think of is chopped egg, but that doesn't seem quite right. :confused
    Tks! kat

Hi Fred_G!! Good to hear from you- that really does ring a bell. That could be it. Now, do you put pickles or pickle relish, or onion in your egg salad? or just salt and pepper? I prefer some chopped dill pickle or pickle relish, salt and pepper, no onion. And Wise potato chips on the side, and if you want to be a childhood memory picnic purist, it must also have warm Koolaid from a plastic Thermos jug (vacuum jug in the UK? No, I've got it, vacuum flask!)

How about an 'egg salad sandwich?' When I lived in PA, my mother used to make them, chopped eggs, mayo, and chopped sweet pickles spread between 2 pieces of black rye bread!! They also sold the stuff by the pound at the Farmer's Market in downtown Lancaster, but it wasn't as good as Moms!!!!'

Hmm, eggs and mayo. Devilled perhaps?;):-D Add hot sauce, pickles as mentioned, dijon mustard, cayenne etc. Pretty much what one wants. Not sure about the Irish version though, maybe some Guiness reduction sauce too!:-D :yum

mmmm...I love egg salad sandwiches (have no idea what they are called in Ireland though).

No relish for me, though. Actually you could nix the mayo too and just add cucumbers as far as I'm concerned. LOL

OK, I am really good with Stubby's idea of egg salad on Dark rye bread- YUM! I had mine on Canadian white. And deviled eggs.... the best- my boys would walk out if I didn't have them on the table at holidays. I like to put in horseradish mayo instead of just plain mayo, and maybe sprinkle powdered chipotle (veryyyyy sparingly) on some instead of just paprika. Here's a great cheese spread that my people just get addicted to- grate a very sharp cheddar, add GOOD mayo (NOT Miracle Whip!!!) to a thick spreadable consistency, mix in a good amount of finely mixed shallots, let sit to mingle tastes, I serve it in a dark rye or pumpernickel bread bowl- sounds so simple, but this is ABSOLUTELY wonderful- and if you have leftover, it makes a great sandwich filling with that leftover (shudder) turkey... (or in a ham omelet!)

That sounds really good too, a nice summer egg salad- my best friend puts chopped cucumber in her macaroni salad, and I really like the cool green flavor! fresh cukes from the garden on thinly sliced bread, lightly salted.... Is it summer yet?
I am really getting ridiculous with this food thread, It is because I am on short commons this month- a lot of pasta based things with yellow cheese powder, lol!
How about chopped hard boiled egg in potato salad? I like that! Never had potato salad with mayo till I grew up, my mom always made it with oil and vinegar- is that a midwest thing or was she trying to keep us from keeling over with salmonella? mmmmmmmm salmonella arghhleargghhh.... :drool

Not into the chicken salad Kat! Now I do like tuna fish sandwiches... Pretty much the same, couple of cans of tuna, some boiled eggs, mayo, mustard, sweet and dill pickle relish, and of course some pepper(s).

I need to get another pepper grinder! Sucks only having one kind of fresh ground pepper at time! :-D

Okay, now that we have finished our 'egg salad sandwiches,' fixed to our liking, how 'bout some desert? How about a nice slab of 'Sho-Fly pie,' or maybe an apple, or peach dumpling topped with whipped cream and a scoop of ice cream? The 'Cup Cheese' is pretty good with a thin slice of 'Souse (SP)' Top it all off with a tall glass of cider (hard cider for you alkies out there) and just before bed....about a dozen Tums should be about right!! Trust me, if you eat all that at one sitting, you'll need them!!! Breakfast, anyone????

What, you need Szechuan, pink, white, black, green, Brazilian etc. grinders too? :confused:p:-D Makes for a small counter.

I have at least 4 kinds of pepper, and only one grinder! I love my peppers. Green Peppercorns from India, India Tellicherry, Malaysian Sarawak White Peppercorns, basic American black pepper... And of course the red pepper, but I buy that ground up, don't need a grinder for it.

Nice Fred, I just buzz up what I think I'll need for the month with a dedicated coffee grinder and store them in jars, I don't mind a bit of cross flavouring.;)

    BTW, 11K PPD now.:)

No crawdads, but good jumbo shrimp, sauteed in butter, garlic, one of those nice mixes of pepper y'all listed, good tabasco, crusty bread.... mmmmm or big thick planks of catfish fried- I even make hushpuppies with them, and not too bad for a Northerner (not a Yankee tho, a Bostonian!)
ANYTHING right now!!! lol, I am soooo sick of bland, packaged food! However, time for bed!!! It was great having supper with all of you!!!
Oh, lemonade would be really nice too....

Hi Wildwolf! Sorry you missed our "dinner" last night! I really need a heart attack on a plate this morning- no water in my apartment when I got up to wash.... Certainly not a morning for yogurt and fruit, I would like corned beef hash, two fried eggs crispy on the bottom, thick slices of seven grain toast, home fries, two sausage links, an orange and a glass of tomato juice with, believe it or not, tho it is 17 degrees outside, a big glass of ice tea....
got to go get my cuppa right now though!

If I could waddle out the door!!!!:heart Actually I have been eating so much pre-packaged and carbos, I am really craving veggies... today, it is so cold, how about a spicy sausage and bean soup (onion! clove! yum yum!) a nice hearty bread to sop things up, a good varied salad on the side with arugula and nifty things and a lovely hot chocolate, fruit and cheese for after- something with real legs to it, like Stilton!
I did not have a kitchen in my loft, and had to move suddenly when the building went under serious code violation.... now I have a lovely little kitchen and I can't wait to concot a nice soup this weekend, or a chili, maybe a good biryani stuffed with golden raisins and things like that- I have soooo missed cooking, it is such a delight! You are all invited!

Nah, I was well past breakfast- that's what I would like for a nice cozy supper on this cold New England night. I really think I am going to concoct homemade soups this weekend- we are expecting a snowstorm, the timing will be perfect!

Ya, I'm making a leek and potato soup or Vichysoisse with baked bacon and sour cream topping with home ground flour bread, baked at home of course. It's not fattening at all!:-D Ya, it's comfort food time of the year.:yum

Hahaha, I would think that Fred G would need a bit more heat than a Guinness could provide if he came this far north.:-D :wine

I'm like a cat now, I need to be near the wood stove these days. Aaahhh.:)

That fireplace looks so good! Thank you for sharing that! I miss a woodstove- my apt is so drafty, I have an electric fire- looks pretty good, but not the same- however, I am getting a little whiff of the woodsmoke from the house next door! I bagged the notion of healthy food tonight had steak sauteed with mushrooms and onions, a side of carrots, mmmm total comfort, but I am sleepy! I haven't been able to cook a decent meal in so long, there was as much pleasure in the cooking as the eating- I am so thrilled to have a real kitchen again! Now I have the electric fire on and am knitting (legwarmers, how appropriate!) and watching CSI season 8 on Netflix instant watch- Heaven! How nice to have simple needs these days! Tomorrow I am going to make a sausage and bean cassoulet with a loaf of crusty wheat bread- got to be honest though it is frozen dough!!!:-o
