    Grrrrrr.....

    Last try..

I was recently given a Dell Dimension XPS T600r.
It running on a new 20g Dell drive with WIN98 and 256 in memory. There are only 2 other programs loaded thus far; Ad Aware and Norton Utilities. (more on that later)
I have done virus scans and ran an Ad Aware. Nothing from the virus scans and, ironically, 3 intrusions thru Ad Aware. (Alexa)
I am unable to load ANYTHING I've downloaded from the net. I am unable to download programs without getting download errors, incomplete downloads, or faults.
In addition, I am CONSTANTLY having to reload .dll's
I can run "SFC", reload the missing files, run it again and have to reloade more that didn't appear on the first scan. I am also prompted to restore some .exe files as well.
I have not been able to load the video or network card drivers. I tried to load Norton System Works and was informed that "C\Windows\ProgramFiles\NortonSystemWorks" is not a valid directory....HUH? Since when hasn't C:\Windows\ProgramsFiles NOT been valid??

I am pulling my hair out on this one.....I've thought BIOS? CMOS? SETUP on BOOT but can't figure it out. ANY and ALL help is GREATLY appreciated!!

    Thanks

    Sounds very possible.......

Now how do I figure out which one without throwing a bunch of parts at it first.

You can try www.memtest.org - if you have bad memory module I think you will see errors very quickly, and lots of them.

Could IDE cable be bad? Check harddisk, may be best to do in DOS with a tool provided by maker - if you can download it. They are free to use. Reseat all cables and memory also.

Something is dying or at least very sick, dont use it more than you have to and do some backups if any data is of importance. It will useless soon

I should have specified that this machine is on it's second replacement drive. My buddy who had it had Dell send him a new one after the first one they sent did the same thing.
The memory tests I did thru Norton and the modules passed. I've also put the network and video cards into different slots thinking the slots might be bad. same problems.

I've attempted loading WinME but get maybe 56% into copying files and it shuts down.

Reloading the drivers for the modem went aithout a hitch but as i've said, I can't for the life of me load in the NIC software. I've tried everything every way.

I'm thinking it could be a bad NIC card but have no way of testing considering my system will not recognize it.

When you say it shuts down, do you mean power down, or blue screen problem? Could be a power supply issue. Do you have another PC chassis that you can put this hard disk into and try to reintall the OS? Someone else recommended changing your IDE cables. That would be a good thing to try first.
