This just burns my wick. My browser slows down and then freezes...and lo and behold...MS wants me to do an update. I don't get the choice unless I want to do something OTHER than use the browser.

Why would your browser slow down? Was this a computer update? Were you using Edge?

I just did an update, but it's because I got a little dot in my notification center.

Every browser starts to slow down until it virtually stops responding, then I notice there is MS update waiting in the tray. Happens every time. ( I was using Chrome at this time. )

That last update really spun the gears on the old comp. Now its a long boot up and everything is slow to run.

I thought everything would settle down like a good boy. I let the comp run till all activity stopped and performed a power reset. Next day repeated tthe same proceedure. Today was the third time booting up. Almost seemed like back to normal. Then it hit the fan and splattered: Even though the update did not change any of my settings through the Windows > Settings route I discovered it DID go into Edge and turn everything back on there. So Edge was chewing up 100% Disc and 60% Memory feeding all the useless default apps I shut off in Windows Settings. So I guess I'm just going to have to wave bye bye to Edge on the old comp after all.

You cannot stop the windows updates and if you delay them your performance gets compromised by the OS or you get completely locked out until you update.
I always know when Micro$oft has done a forced update as two of my computers run 24/7 and I come in to the login screen and then I have to change my network settings back to what I want and not what Micro$oft thinks I need (for my protection mind) plus I always have to turn their wretched firewall and defender back off as I have my own AV mitigation plus a hardware firewall in my router........it really sh*ts me off.
I tried some tweaking software to prevent all Micro$oft updates and after 90 days was completely locked out at the boot screen for violating the EULA by preventing updates............so I was locked out until after I allowed an update to occur and whitelisted all Micro$oft update sites in my hardware firewall so they can shake hands with my computer again.......GRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!:mad::mad: It is my computer and I should choose if I want a f#@king update or not!!!!!o_Oo_Oo_O

You have completely missed the point. I know I can turn off forced updates but that is not my issue and doesn't help as the update still happens at some point because you can't stop updates.

I don't want any updates unless I choose them and then only because something no longer works!!!!!

In my defence I am an electronics engineer who for the last 20 years was the IT Admin of a national Australian company with a presence and salesforce in every capital city and which has several encrypted VPNs to New York, London, Paris and Milan. Also my son is a computer science engineer who specialises in computer security and network penetration testing. Micro$oft has nothing to offer me in the way of security or protection which is why I have my own high end managed router with commercial grade hardware firewall and with full traffic analysis which is connected to my 1Gb/s fibre optic connection running directly into my premises.
You may ask why I even use Windows and it is a valid question and the answer is I have to have an OS that is compatible with my client's systems and most businesses use Windows of one flavour or another so there you go......

Yes, you can choose to DELAY when the update happens, but it will still freeze my browser when the time comes. Being on the internet is pretty much all I do. So the question of "what other programs are running" is really mute. All I can do is delay the inevitable.

I don't notice my laptop slowing down at all when it's time to install an update - just the 'sudden' appearance of the "update icon" in the taksbar notification area. But then, I am no power user.

Maybe add more RAM? Or ask Santa for a new computer? :)

8 gigs ... can't add more. My wifes HP laptop was slow, I added 4 gigs to give her 8 gigs and updates don't mess with her browsers.
