I just built myself I new pc with the Win7 Pro O/S. I have an external drive that was connected to my old system (XP Pro) via the USB port. I didn't think I would have any problems just plugging it into my new system, but I find that a lot of files that weren't write protected on my old system, are write protected now, and there's now way I can change that. I've tried to take ownership without success. My account is part of the Administrators group on my new pc.

I tried forcing and ownership change of just one folder using the command prompt and the following syntax,
    takeown /f folder_name /r /d y

This did not work. I was on the root of the drive when I attempted that command.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Well once again, I've resolved my own issue. Another Google search yielded a site that explained the DISKPART command in Win7. Even though the Read Only attribute was set to No, I cleared it anyway, and that unchecked the Read Only attribute on at least one file that I knew it was checked on, and I was able to take ownership of the drive. Now whether or not this is the case after a reboot remains to be seen.

    I may be back!! :)
