Help! I need to recover some chat fragments, etc. and know that there's technology out there to do so because I've found countless firms out there that do it but, I'm not sure who to go to, how much help I really need, if this Encase software will do the trick, etc. I just need someone to give me some direction.

    Welcome to MajorGeeks.

Professional data recovery services are not cheap, so you would really need to value the data in question.

What operating system are you using, what happened to the files (eg, deleted, corrupt etc) and how long ago did it happen?

There may be free alternatives you could use, some of which are listed HERE.

well for about 200-400$, you can go to On Track and purchase their standard edition software that enables you to recover entire hdd's even if they are corrupt/nonbootable/etc; personally I've used the software and found it invaluable really.

Ontrack is nice, been using it for awhile. Then I ran into GetDataBack, which works very well. When Ontrack fails, I use GetDataBack.

Also, I've used Testdisk (free/topnotch email support) which I've used to restore a wiped partition.....ummm...mistake I made with a ghost image.
