i know it was stupid of me but someone showed me this cool trick to set a password to my laptop while i was in college. Now i've forgotten the password and tried using a boot disc so the pc would boot off of that but it didn't work, i can't even get to the DOS screen when booting up - b/c i'm prompted to enter my password. This is not a windows password. I've looked through this site and DL'ed something already but it didn't work. I know that the operating system is windows 95 and that the pc is a 1997.
i also know (from the screen just before i'm prompted to enter a password):
    System Soft Bios for UMC8890
    Notebook Computer Version 1.00.1.00.09-21-97-23BW

At the top of the password screen the following displays:
    System Soft SCU for Notebook

And the label on one of the chips reads:
    OPTi

If anyone can help i would greatly appreciate it!!!

    Thanks,
    Stephanie

Can you get to the battery? If so, remove it for a little while, it should clear it. If you can find your motherboard manual, they all have directions on clearing the BIOS. Note when you do this, factory settings will be restored, with most laptops, thats not a big issue, but check into it first.

Optionally, we have some BIOS clearing tools you can try here:

    Thanks soo much.

The laptop doesn't have a battery...and i have no manuals for it at all, but i did DL a BIOS clearing tool. i turned the laptop off, inserted the disc with the BIOS, turned the pc back on - the A drive made a sound like it was reading the disc and then it just went to the same screen asking me to enter a password. What am i doing wrong??

The battery hes referring to isnt the one your probably thinking of on your laptop. Its on the motherboard and if your not too knowledgable about dissasembling and reassembling computers it would be better to take it to a local computer store and have them reset the bios for you.
