i happen to have the same problem as ivannadeau except in my case it was a computer given to me by my brother before he went into the military. he forgot his vista PW and said the comp's mine if i can figure out how to get around it.

normally a guest account on the computer would suffice but i'm trying to set up a wireless router and it's denying me access to the things i need because i'm not administrator.

i tried Ophcrack, but when i installed it it said it couldn't unzip certain files, and therefore it didn't work. i looked into the NT password editor but it looks to shaky and like it could cause more problems than help.

i know this is an old thread but i'm having the exact same problems so i figured i'd just keep this one going instead of starting another one.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

ok this is what you do keep turning off your computer by holding the power button then when you get a screen that says start windows normal or windows safe and a few others
do windows safe i think its called and when if brings your to the start menu click or type in admin and then passwords admin

i think i know what you're trying to say. and i've tried the f8 mode. it still asks for a password to log into the admin account.

if it's any help the computer is a Toshiba Satellite something-or-other. not sure of an official model type other than that.

just tried that. it won't let me open it as an admin. it still comes up as a guest. and when i tried it anyway i got

    "Access Denied"
    "System Error 5"

did i do it wrong somehow?

When you went into safe mode....can we assume you just left the password blank and hit enter?

no, i didn't leave it blank. the instructions i read said either leave it blank or type something in. that it didn't matter.

and i'm not to sure, but is giving an IP address out a good thing?

I know some don't like this software, but there is Hiren's Boot disk out there and I think it may be compatible with Vista. At least give it a try. I used is on Win 2K and I know it works with XP as well.

    I hope it helps.

Absolutely NOT! Don't give your IP addy or other private info to anyone you don't know and trust. This user should never have even made such a statement...he''s new here and has much to learn yet.

My apologies. It was never my intention to say anything harmful in this forum, I was only trying to help.

You should not be asking users for IP's etc. Help is not to be taken off the forum or to PM's as it defeats the purpose of having a tech forum in the first place. Also, please watch your language...no need to use such words and efforts to get around the filters are frowned upon.

I didn't use any offensive language, so why would you say that? OK. I'm not gonna get sucked into a rant, so I will just say OK.

I'm sorry Dreizehn, but I can't recommend any better free password dohickies than OHP, without resorting to Linux.

There are a number of paid for utilities out there that can change the password for you, the best value and easiest to use is probably the Spotmau disk, which is also useful in other ways.

    www.spotmau.com.

    Happy New Year.

I'll second this. Also, it is generally not installed, but run as a live CD. are you attempting ti install it? If so, try the lice cd instead:

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/oph....3.1/ophcrack-vista-livecd-2.3.1.iso/download

Download it, create a cd from the ISO file, then boot it up.

just wanna say a big thank you to those of you who have helped. still haven't gotten it to work yet. going to try some of the options mentioned above and if all else fails i'll resort to possibly buying a program.

    once again, thanks all.

Can you get into the BIOS?
I suspect you have a BIOS password problem, not a forgotten windows password problem.

If you have to supply a password when you try to access the BIOS, that would confirm my theory.
The tools you are using are for windows password recovery/edit not a BIOS password problem.
