Right, in a bit of a situation. I have a laptop where I can log in using a fingerprint scanner, but I have forgotton my password, which I need when entering safemode (to reset trial version of something...)

I cant change my password unless I know the current one! Is there any way I can change it, I don't want to have to change the user account to a different local account and lose everything! please help

not its not a Microsoft account I need access to, its a local user admin account.

Get a copy of "ntpwedit". Run it from a live cd of anykind to work on an offline Windows.

You can turn an ISO into a bootable USB stick using Rufus 2.9.934
My suggestion in earlier post will work with Windows 10 and you choose from which account you wish to delete the password.

This can be found in Hieren's boot CD but you will need to download the ISO and burn it onto a USB stick probably using Rufus

Stephen in right on both cases. It's really easy to reset a password to get access back. ntpwedit doesn't advertise support for 8.1 either but it does work. If you make your computer's rescue thumbdrive it can be run from there.

You will need to disable Secure Boot and enable Legacy Support first - then it should boot from USB.

Move the USB key up to the top position in Legacy Boot Order

Did the download arrive as an ISO file? If yes did you burn it to USB using...
These computer things are very dim. It is all about getting the right procedure sorted. Then they are happy.
    You are getting very close,

The contents of the ISO file have have not been extracted to the USB drive.
You need to use Rufus as suggested by Stephen_c16.

The journey is to create a bootable USB drive from your downloaded file.
To do this you must first install
on the computer that currently holds the downloaded file.
When you run Rufus it will ask for a USB drive and the address of the downloaded ISO file.
(I think there may be a box to tick to create a Bootable USB drive).
It will reformat the USB drive as it creates a Bootable drive.

Take the USB drive to the dell computer and use it in thread #10 above.

    GOOD LUCK.

Check the box next Create a bootable disk using.
    Navigate to the ISO file.
    Click Start.
