Format External Drive Ntfs To Exfat

Last week, I bought an external hard drive 4TB (so it's fresh out of the box). I want to use the HD for both a Mac and PC (Win 7 and Win 10).

In Win 10's Disk Management, a full format to exFAT resulted in RAW. However, a quick format will have the Drive appear as exFAT

In Win 10 Command Prompt, I had tried several attempts at:

    format e: /fs:exfat

with various results (including invalid volume name; others).

Right now (after a quick format to exFAT via Disk Management), a list volume shows:

    1) Would I be able to use the Command Prompt to convert Volumes 0 and 1 and 2 to exFAT ?
    2) Is it possible that the brand new Hard Drive was defective when I bought it? Or, used by someone else?
    3) Would anyone know why RAW happens? Is it common to have FAT32 as a format for SYSTEM?

    Many thanks!

If helpful, I just tried to reformat via the Command Prompt diskpart - and after a couple of hours of formatting (increasing number of the percentage), the following message appeared:

Diskpart has encountered an error: The parameter is incorrect. See the System Event Log for more information

I would appreciate any great advice about this brand new external HD.

You could try skipping the command line route, and use software like EaseUs. Personally, I like AOMEI better. Or, just use Windows, it's not FAT32. As long as it's actually E: and not unallocated space either software should see the drive. Then just choose your format type, etc. Volume 3 appears to be exFAT as it stands.

    the mekanic, thank you!

I was only able to format the drive to exFAT with the quick format, not a full format (i tried Windows Disk Management as well as the Command Prompt).

Thanks for the suggestion re AOMEI, I'll try.
