I'm trying to convert my vob files to avi files to save space so I can store more movies on my computer. I'm using Format Factory to do so as I hear it is a very good program. My problem is that whenever I convert the vobs to avi, I see that frames are being dropped throughout the movie and that the sound is becomming more and more out of sync as the movie progresses. In the settings I have tried to have the output fps be the same as the original vob file, so I don't know why it's doing this or how to fix it. Any advice?

For VOBs to avi I still like AutoGK. I'm not sure how fast Format Factory is but AutoGK uses two passes and is rather slow but always provides good results.

I'd say give one movie a shot with AutoGK and see how it does with a movie you are having problems with when using Format Factory. I've never had a problem with dropped frames or audio synch issues. Basic guide to AutoGK use is here but defaults are usually good. [I don't use it very often but I think it tends to select a 1.36gb movie size by default--split into to 700mb files. There is a way to get one 1.36gb file but I can't remember the exact steps. Are you looking for a specific size for the final avi file?]

Both FFactory and AutoGK have not been updated in a while so if there are better options available I'd be interested. EDIT: I realize that my prejudice against Format Factory may be unjustified as I now see that their program was last updated in July/2010 which is more current than AutoGK. Their website has a copyright date of 2008 but the software is still being developed.

I still would give AutoGK a try as I have not found a program that gives better final results.

I've solved the problem. It was a very weird problem. The very first of my vob files for a movie I have lists the framerate at 29 while the rest have it at 23. The first file is actually 23 as well, but for some reason says 29. Format factory tried to make the whole thing convert to 29fps because of what the first vob file said. This made the resulting avi stutter. Once I set it to always convert the files to 23 fps, it worked like a charm. Phew, I had to make like 10 different copies before I finally narrowed it down to this.
