This is for my sister's computer, it first started when she'd get the blue screen of death while playing world or warcraft sometimes and then whenever she opened firefox she would get the blue screen of death. So I formatted the computer and re-installed Windows XP SP3. It worked fine but she still got the blue screen of death and then I realised that the video card was broken(which caused the blue screen of death probably). Then we put a new video card, it worked great. Now there is another problem, apparently everytime windows starts up it gives a notification saying that something in the registry was corrupted and that windows recovered the file. It has been doing this since before the blue screen of death and is still doing it after the format. Then I thought the hard drive might be messed up so I installed Windows on the second hard drive. I still got the same notification. Besides that notification the computer worked fine for about a few days and now whenever the computer gets into Windows, a blue screen of death again.

I normally know how to solve a problem like this but I'm baffled. I just read up on tom's hardware about a BIOS virus and I hope my sister's computer doesn't have one. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

    A couple of ideas
First to really find out what that BSOD is really from...

Then if that does not work and you really think she has a virus we have a great bunch of peoples right here at MG's who eat malware for breakfast...

You may also wish to try another clean install after zeroing out the drive with the manufacturers(of the HD) disc tools... you can find those here at MG's( you have to look around for your particular make)

One last thought ...is there a recovery or hidden partition on the hd ? ( some HP,Compaq,Dell etc ) use these. these can remain hidden even after a clean install and cause no end of weird problems
