Hi, I just recently formatted my hard drive bc I was having many issues with my computer. Now I'm having different issues with my computer and I can't figure out why. I thought maybe it was malware, but I posted in that section and I don't believe that's causing the problem. I can not install any new programs onto the computer. Every time I try, I get an error message saying that something is corrupt. The internet also runs very slowly for some reason. Also, the blue screen constantly pops up while using the computer, forcing me to restart it. Does anyoene know what might be causing this issue? :confused

Definitely need more information. In addition to what chaimjm needs:
    1) When you formatted, did you use Windows boot disk (I am going to assume windows)? 2 )When it came to the screen asking you where you want to install, did you delete all partitions before installing?
    3) Did you do a full format or a quick?
4)Was there any errors when you formatted?
5)Why did you format in the first place?
6)Did you ever run chkdsk? If you did, did it say you had any bad sectors on the HDD?
7)You say you may have malware. While this is unlikely if you deleted all partitions off the HDD when you installed windows, have you been getting pop-ups? Have you tried running an online scanner like bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html?
8)Are you sure you got all the drivers completely installed?

That should be a good start. I numbered them so you could just give the number and your answer in your response.

Ok, I'm sorry I never had the chance to post a reply sooner..but my work schedule didn't allow me to do so. This is one of 3 computers in my house..so it does not belong to me, and therefore I didn't reformat the last time. I believe the computer had been infected with malware and viruses, so my dad just decided to reformat. The last time it was reformated, he used Windows Service Pack 1a install cd from my computer, because his Dell computer did not come with the original OS disc. We had to request to have it mailed to us later, which we now have. He ran a full format, but did not delete all the partitions.

I attempted to run chkdsk, but each time it told me that it would perform the operation the next time the computer was restarted. I would restart, and chkdsk would never run. So I gave up, and decided to just reformat again. I tried to use the disc that Dell sent, but could not. The disc they sent with the operating system on it is a dvd, not cd. When I went into BIOS to change the boot order, the dvd player was not an option, and so I couldn't boot from the dvd?! I decided to try again with the Service Pack 1a cd, and then upgrade to service pack 2. I deleted all partitions and then did a full format. It was almost done formatting when I got many error messages saying that certain files could not be installed...which are as follows:
    usrvdca.dll
    usrvpa.dll
    usrmlnka.exe
    usrcntra.dll
    usrdpa.dll
    usrdtea.dll
    usrfaxa.dll
    usrlbva.dll
    usrprbda.exe
    usrrtosa.dll
    usrsdpia.dll
    usrshuta.exe
    usrv42a.dll
    usrv80a.dll

I continued with the rest of the process anyways, but now I have no clue what to do?rolleyes

P.S. I did run an online virus scanner before reformatting...and it did not find any viruses. I wasn't getting any pop-ups when using that computer. I honestly do not believe that the issue had to do with malware or viruses.

Allright. First off, I assume you have two optical drives in your computer, one a CD reader and one a DVD reader? A lot of BIOS's will let you set CD/DVD drives as first in the boot order, and then you have to go to the CD/DVD drive options and set your DVD drive as the first drive and the CD drive as the second. You will probably have to look around a bit to figure it out. If all else fails, you should be able to bring up the boot menu during startup and manually select the DVD drive from a list of options.

If it cannot install specific files during the installation process, it is because 1) the disk is scratched or smudged preventing it from reading files or 2) your optical drive is not working quite right. Try to clean the Windows XP disk (Windex and a cloth works well I've heard) and see if you can't boot that Dell disk from your DVD drive.

Ok, so I finally figured out how to boot from the dvd drive. I had to go into BIOS and basically turn off the cd drive. I reformatted using the original Dell OS dvd, and it was almost done until error messages came up again about not finding certain XP Service Pack 2 files. I will try cleaning the dvd, and let you know what happens. Thanks!
