    Hello,

i hope any one can help me with this i had very important data (photos and videos) on a flash memory kingstone i was forced to format it by windows 7 the partation was NTFS but when i formatted i changed to FAT32

i've been trying to recover the data but no way it only reads the data since i changed to FAT32 :s i didnt really copy over the old data much just 3 videos added and then deleted and now i have few photos and stuff on it itsnot even alot of stuff just few things

is there any way i can recover the photos and videos i had on the flash memory before formatting to FAT32?

Sadly no. If you look up cautions about using the FORMAT command, you will be warned everything is gone because a format wipes the drive.
    This would include USB sticks.

Sorry plodr but you are incorrect when you say that it is all gone after a format.

A format just lays out a new "map" of the drive, and it doesnt write anything to the vast majority of the drive

Ther is plenty of software available that will recover most if not all of your data (videos may not be perfect afterwards)

I recovered over 250GB of video off a drive that had been formatted recently and recovered 100% of it... about 99% of it is perfect, the other bits are a bit choppy and wont play in anything other than VLC.

Kilwa, head over to Easus.com and download ther free program for recovery....

I'm not sure that any freeware would recover the data but I have had a lot of success using RecoverMyFiles, there's a trial version available to test whether your data can still be found.

Hmmm, unfortuantley i think that may be right. :(

I'm forgetting the one i used may not have been aquired via the official channels.

Regardless, you can get your data back.... jsut you might have to buy a program to do it.

Edit: It looks like you can get 1GB for free from the easus one.

If you've added files after the deletion/format, that will severely limit your chances of rescuing anything. Did you try the demo of RMF on the "Recover Drive" setting? That ignores FAT structure, Partition Tables and NTFS file logs, effectively searching the raw data. It's slow but, in my experience, very good.

You allowed the scan to complete, yes?

Well, if that didn't find the deleted files, based on my experience with that recovery software, you're not likely to get those files recovered easily for less than a very large amount of money. Do you realise that your 3 videos can obliterate thousands of photo's?

There's some software you can try, it's free - but it may not be easy to either understand or use for 'average' computer users.

One thing about forums like this is, the more help and details you can give us, the better we can 'tune' the answers and steps to suit you. "No, it didn't work" is not the kind of reply that we like to see, "It didn't work but here's the logfile", is a much more useful reply, it gives us confidence in your abilities and more background information for us to work from.

well thanks man i know what u mean
but yeah i tried it and left to scan to the end i even looked at the options i tried to find any thing that could help me but nothing really helped
i even tried a software called restor ultimate it should be an epic software it didnt find any NTFS files i disabled the FAT scan since i know it will be found

and i didnt really know it could be recoverd when i added those 3 videos i thought i lost the data forever then a friend told me that data can never be lost unless u burn the hardware itself so i started looking for resolves

its kingston datataveler 100 the black one if u know it... 4GB

and as for the software u gave me i downloaded it and i started the normal testrdive i coudnt analyze any NTFS data i used the NONE type not the Intel/Pc if u know what i mean , cuz when i choosed the intel one i got alot of options about sectors and bad relative stuff i didnt really understand so went back to my NONE option :D

then i tried the photorec win it really worked it even recover weird thing i dont even remember puting it on the memory :| maybe i did but i dont remember and it is still loading when it finish i will tell u if it could recover my files or not and i'm gonna look for the logfile xD if u told me where it puts it or could have put it , u would be done to me a real favour :D thanks

    NP ^^

Recovery of data means just that, recovery of files is much different. The first takes a huge amount of time to turn into something useful, the latter can be used immediately.

The first time I was involved with data/file recovery on a flash memory card, we had enough files to fill it 3 times over!

I could never remember and rapidly recall all the useful options, like where the logfiles are found, on every piece software I've used - even over the last few months ^^

    OK!

well it didnt restore the NTFS photos i even deselected all file types and left jpg but it only recovered the files that are already on the usb and the files that been recently deleted :|
it did good job with exe files tho xD and TXT files i found loads and loads of txt files i dont really know what is it for

as for the logfile i couldnt find it and it didnt ask me if i want to creat one unlike the testdrive-win.exe

i've tried to play with the options and make expert scan but i got nothing
it just asked me if i want to unformat a FAT filesystem i choosed Y
and i chosed the highest block numbers and again the hightest offset number even tho i dont get what is that but when i chosed low number it didnt do much search xD

any way it finished with 0 files found and asked me if i want to create image_remaining.dd file i press Y nothing really happend i pressed N nothing really happened i think it got stuck or something

although the time i choosed low number and pressed N it worked fine
    so
any way thanks for the software i think its super powerful but also it didnt really get any NTFS files all of the files were added after i formated to FAT

and as u said the files i added may make it harder to recover the older onces also i rememberd after i've seen the files i recovered that i added softwares and stuff too and formated it (quick format) before i add the 3 videos and then now the 4 stupid games that my friend added them its light games tarazan and dig jim and stuff like that :s

I'm running out of suggestions here. I think you need to re-think the value you place upon the missing files and consider whether a commercial recovery may be easier.

That or safely storing the flash memory card until you have the means to deal with it properly.

Other Majorgeeks users may have differing opinions or suggestions on your problem and you are very welcome to wait and try them, or do a search here to see what has worked for others with similar problems.

Being forced by Windows to format the card, overwriting files 2 or 3 times, changing the format type, etc., that makes it close to an FBI job.

    hahahahaha xD
    yeah i'm FBI xD

okay man thanks alot any way u helped at least i would go that far on my own any way xD

i think i will just deal with the fact that its gone xD actually i asked a professional company at recovery to see if its even possible to recover the photos or not so i dont bother waiting for nothing

also i would kinda need the memory for other work so just freezing it will freeze my work as well xD

again thanks man and thanks evey one for trying with me its really great forum over here i should take around i'm sure i will learn something at least
