Formatting a Win 98SE comp and upgrading to Win XP Pro SP2

Hello there,

I have a Windows 98 SE computer and I want to format it and then install Windows XP Professional SP 2.

How exactly do I format my Windows 98? Do I just need to open up a command prompt and type "format c:\" ? and then when that is done just pop in the Windows XP Pro CD?

Suggestions? What is the reccomended way?

Try this:

1. Set BIOS to boot from CD. To do this do the following:
- Power on your machine
- Press the key to enter BIOS (aka Setup) its usually F1 or delete. The first screen will say for sure.
- Look for an option that says boot order, or sequence or similar
- Change this so that a CDROM drive is first
2. Insert your XP cd and restart
3. Press any key when prompted.

This will guide you through the process of formatting, and installing windows XP. You should backup any personal files on the drive before formatting, as they will be erased in the process.

After I do all the formatting and installing of Windows XP - do I need to reset the BIOS? i.e. change the order/sequence?

No, if there is no bootable disc in the CD tray, it will move on to the next item in the boot order until it finds a bootable device.

 

OK, ive gotten to the Setup processs for windows xp - i am the screen where it lists my partition (c) - I have 3 options :
Enter - Install windows xp on the partition
Delete - Delete partition
Quit

I see no option to Format my partition - what am I doing wrong?
