    Hello there,

    I have a system that has multiple drive letters. C - I.
I am assuming this is a partitioned drive. Each one has
been assigned 12GB. Is it possible to format just the C
Drive and leave the rest of them intact or if I format the
C does it affect the rest of the drives. Would I have to
repartition? I hope I am explaining myself
    correctly.

I have a lot of data on the other drives and I don't
want to lose them. I can back it up, I was just wondering
    if it would be necessary.

This is an older system, Pentium 3, W2K, 520mb Ram.

    Thanks,

    Kim

You are quite safe in just formatting the C drive. The other partitions which are seen as the other drives will not be affected.

Just remember that if you actually have programs rather than data on the other drives they may need re-installing as the data for those will be kept in the Windows registry which would be on the C drive with the rest of the OS.

I too am running Win2000 with a partioned drive (C & E) and I have reformatted just my C drive numerous times and it has not affected my E drive. However, it is strongly advisable to BACK-UP your other drive since you don't wish to format that one. If that material on the other partion is valuable BACK IT UP!! just in case something would go haywire. Like I've said, I've never had any problems and you probably won't either, but since you're dealing with valuable stuff BACK IT UP!!! Sorry, I didn't mean to yell, but I learned that 'back-up' lesson the hard way!!:) So yes, it would be fine to reformat just the C drive and if you have anything on the C drive you wish to save, well you know what too do!!!

im pretty sure that if you format c:\ which most likely contains the windows installation it will effect the other partitions.

Ive always had my HD partitioned and when ive formatted my HD ive run format c: and ive always had to reinstall everything and partition again. Which i wanted to do by the way.

If Windows is in your C: and you format it using the Win 2000 CD then its unlikely that you will loose data in your " I " Drive. But i Echo Stubby's Words, BACK UP your DATA .... !

Which OS do you Have ???? Coz if you have Win XP or 2000 then the command " Format C:" is not needed.
