I have a simplex pininfarina hdd and for some reason it oly lets my macbook pro read it. My hp laptop cannot read it. is there a way to format the hdd without losing the data in it? I recently had my hp laptop upgraded to windows 7 if that matters, prior it was xp and all was good.
    Please and Thank You!

When you insert the drive into the PC, does it say anything? Recognized in the Computer window as a drive?

Goto disk management. Does it show there? Might be a conflicting drive name/letter

Right click on your drive in the bottom section of the screen, then set as active. Tell me if anything changes.

the only thing that says active is set partition as active and it is not highlighted I cannot click it.

Sorry man, that is most definitely not a good thing.

    Here are some other options.

Get a universal drive adapter, they are not expensive, and hook up your drive to it.

If it shows in my computer, then I would use the following utility to recover data again, just to make sure that the files aren't corrupt.

If your simplex pininfarina is formatted in anything but FAT32 then windows will not be able to read it. A hard drive for a Mac might be formatted as HFS+ and will never be readable by a windows computer.
Anything formatted FAT32 can be seen and used on a windows PC, an Apple computer and a computer running linux even though all three operating systems might be formatted differently.

Check the box, did it say formatted for use in a Mac and PC or did it just say formatted for a Mac?

Clarify: it was working fine in XP but now is not working in windows 7?

note for me: I can find simpletech pininfarina but nothing called simplex pininfarina.

Not true in the slightest. Windows can read FAT (the original), FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, CDFS, UFS, NFS and probably some more I have forgotten.

@todd517: I was about to suggest a HFS+ to windows converter but they are all payware. Sorry.
