Found new hardware wizard?

Simple question, is it possible to disable this function temporarily?
Another thing I want to disable if it is possible is the "Safely remove hardware" function. Could I stop both of these functions in my operating system somehow?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Well, it is not that simple unfortunately. I have a real problem with drivers on this laptop. Windows seems to have forgotten what to do when it comes to installing drivers. I have tried everything and can not get anything to work.

I will give you some examples:

I have a built in webcam which has become unresponsive, a plug and play usb stick which is not recognized, my CD drive doesn't show up and I also have a compact flash card reader (also plug and play) which is not recognized when plugged in.

The only way I could ever get a device to work is:
I go into device manager > uninstall associated driver for the device> restart laptop with device plugged in > cancel the driver wizard > then it works until unplugged. Then I have to do the same thing again after the device is unplugged.

So it only seems to work when there is no driver, and as soon as windows starts trying to install the driver it breaks functionality. :confused
If I go ahead and let windows install the driver, it always comes up with one of the following errors:

Windows found driver software for your device but encountered a problem trying to install it. There is no driver selected for the device information set or element. (OK windows, so how do I select it!).

    .

    Confusing

So anyway, I want to try a process of elimination by disabling the found new wizard and the safely remove hardware wizard, as I have a hunch these things are causing my devices (or at least my card reader) to not function.

The deletion of the driver worked up until recently for my compact flash card reader, I would do the process above and it would work fine and be readable. But now when I try - I restart and it shows up in the drives panel as before, but when I double click the drive it says: Please insert a disk into drive G, and of course there is a disk, it is just unreadable but I don't know why.

I am getting incredibly annoyed with this now, as I am a photographer and need this to function on my laptop.

I am using 32 bit vista home, with service pack 1.

Thanks for any help, although I would very much like to know the answer to my original question.

    Cheers.

Sounds like a motherboard driver issue so use the program i suggested and install everything and see what happens, especially the motherboard as that allows everything to communicate properly.

P.S That was the answer to your original question. You are doing it wrong. Take my advice or don't. Screw the drivers that Windows automatically installs.

Hello Major, thanks for the links. I ran the program you linked to and installed all the updates it brought up. I have restarted but nothing seems to have changed regarding my hardware devices.

IT was recommended to me to try deleting everything under universal serial bus controllers, but they have not reinstalled and when I try through device manager, it searches forever and then tells me:

Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while trying to install it.

There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.

    WHAT DOES THIS MEAN???
    (I hate Vista)

The program you suggested now says:

Your system has the latest stable drivers and updates installed.

But evidently this is not the case. Is my computer broken beyond repair?

This is what I am dealing with:

I know that is your DVD player, is that working?

Bizarrely it is the same as the compact flash reader in that it only works when the driver is deleted via device manager and the computer is restarted.. It shows up in the drives panel and works with no problem.

But as soon as the wizard kicks in and tries to install a driver the CD drive disappears from the drives panel and is unusable again, same with the CF reader.

    How weird is that?

Starting to suspect a problem on your motherboard at this point which is not actually something that can be fixed. We have exhausted everything else I can think of unless someone else can jump in here.

Cheers for having a look Major.. yeah, it certainly doesn't seem logical to me.
If anyone has any other suggestions I would be happy to hear, as my computer is lacking in its ability to function.

Maybe I just need a new one. Can anyone spare £1000?

    :-D

    Cheers bro.

    Hi

    How old is your PC?

Have you had any malware or major issues with this laptop reciently? as I just wonder if you enter the BIOS (as soon as your laptop boots their will be a quick popup message of what keys to press to enter the BIOS).

When in the BIOS go into each menu and write down the settings or take a photo of them so you remember what they where set as, then in one of the menus should be a "reset to default" this will set the BIOS back to default setttings, hence why write down what could have been changed in the menus.

Then Save and Exit the BIOS (F10) and the laptop will reboot, then re-enter the BIOS and make sure things like date and time are correct and the boot order is set to say CDROM then HDD or just direct to HDD and Save and Exit (F10) then BIOS again. This may help reset hardware configs, but if you have more serious hardware issues as the Major points out this may not help. I just have a feeling Plug and Play is not kicking in on boot.

A longshot and something thats not going to cause issues is to on a different PC download a version of Linux and Ubuntu is ok (many other options but they dont matter just need one that is a Live CD) and then if you can enter your BIOS, set the 1st boot device to CDROM and then save and exit then boot to the Linux CD and that could be a way to see if your hardware is working ok.

All the info you need on downloading and burning a Linux CD HERE

Hello David, thank you for the info it is much appreciated.

That is one thing I have not tried yet, I haven't looked in the BIOS or the registry at all - mostly because I do not know what I am doing :p

I will definitely follow your advice tho as I also think the issue is with plug and play. Plus anything is worth a try at this point.

The USB port is definitely getting power as when I plug in for example my card reader, the light comes on. However it asks for a driver and doesn't show up in dive panel.

Anyway, I will try what you said and get back to let you know if it worked.
    Thanks bro. :)
