FPS Dropping?

    Hey guys,

So, just very recently (within the last few days), while playing Call of Duty 4 when I scope in my FPS goes from 250 to 25. Immediately when I unscope, my FPS goes back to 250. I have it set locked at 250 FPS. It does this whether it is in iron sights or not. I joined a number of different servers, as I thought I was just lagging, but it isn't lag. It only has this issue in some servers, and others it doesn't (50 ping - 200 ping. No difference).

I'm running on an Acer Predator G7 with the graphics card all up to date. This is the only game I'm having the issue with.

I don't know if this is the correct place to be posting this, but if I could get some help on this I'd appreciate it.

Here are my PC stats if this helps:

    Manufacturer: Acer
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 930 @ 2.80GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.8GHz
    Memory: 12278MB RAM
    Hard Drive: 1 TB
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470
    Monitor: Dell SR2320L
Sound Card: Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)
    Speakers/Headphones: Logitech Z506 Surround Sound
    Keyboard: Logitech G110
    Mouse: Razer Mamba
    Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_gdr.101026-1503)

    Thanks,

    Brett

First off, thank you for posting full info.

I'm not sure what can be causing it, does it do the same thing in single player?
What I would also try is to turn all Graphics settings to lowest and see if it still does it.
As a secondary test to eliminate more questions, also try the test on Single Player.
I have a feeling it wont do it which would then lead me to suggest a possible graphics card issue, maybe damage or heat.

When you zoom in it requires a resolution change, I once had the issue of it going blank when scoping in. Turned out to be my GPU was dying and simply couldn't handle the fast res switch.

Also you would be wise to check you system temps, this is something I always suggest people do when having any issues with graphics simply due to the fact many people don't realise how much dust build up can make to a GPU performance.
To test temps download and install "Speccy"
Note temps on idle, then fire game and play for a couple of minutes and then check temps again.

If all temps check out ok and the test doesn't make any difference then first thing I would do is reset the 250fps lock which has possibly created a weird glitch in the game engine/system. I realise you have been running fine for however long, but this is a PC, weird things happen, expect the unexpected and check the unlikely.
After that I would reinstall the game.

After that, I guess we pick away at it until a resolution is found :)

Thanks for the response. I just tested it in single player, and I didn't have the issue. I couldn't pull up my FPS (or console in that matter), which means my FPS could have been set to 60 FPS or less. So...unfortunately that test won't be as valid as we'd hoped!

As for a possible "damage" to the graphics card, how could that be relevant unless it was like that in every other game I played. Call of Duty 4 is the only game where I'm having an issue. Feed my confusion there please!

I ran Speccy as asked, and the idle temps will show here:

The game temps will show here:

    NOTE:
While I was running the game for this test, I didn't have this issue. It seems to be inconsistent. I don't know if there is any reason for that, or if my computer was just overheating the last few days.

If it happens again, I'll rinse and repeat and repost. Thanks for the help!

You can get your FPS from Fraps, if you don't mind installing and running that while playing. It shows continuously in whichever corner you tell it to show (ruins immersion in RPGs, but great for troubleshooting like this).

Also, if it only ever happens in multi-player, try this long shot: Reinstall your network drivers.

Typical huh, it's the old "My car makes a weird noise" but it wont happen for the mechanic lol

Hope you find something, and like I said, try resetting your frame rate lock. Whether it makes sense or not, if it's at all possible, it's worth eliminating.
