FPS Issues in Quake III: Arena.

    Okay, so I've been having some FPS issues in Quake 3. At first my FPS will remain at a constant 125 (as it should be). Give it a couple of minutes and it will degrade. FPS will jump down to 80, and sometimes as low as 60.

    System Specs:

    Pentium 4 3.0Ghz HT
    2048 GB DDR400 RAM
    470 Watt Thermaltake PSU (Runs very cool, high quality PSU).
    Sapphire ATi Radeon X1950PRO 512MB GDDR3
    Using Windows XPSP2 Pro Corporate stripped to the bone edition.
    Using Catalyst 8.3 w/ AGP Hotfix.
    Have latest DirectX 9 installed.

    Things to consider:

    Call of Duty 4 runs rather nicely on higher graphics settings. I can even set the Resolution up to 1650 * 1080 (My monitor's native res).
    I run Quake 3 on a custom aspect ratio, using 1440 by 900.
    It actually runs worse then on my old Radeon 9600XT 128MB.

    A bit of a Necropost here, but anyone having any issues with AGP ati card performance, it would be a good idea to downgrade your drivers to Catalyst 7.4. The new driver suites have poor AGP support, and the so called "AGP Hotfix" doesn't function very well.

    The older driver versions can be downloaded off of the official ATi website in their archives section. Hope that helps!

    Nah my CoD 4 doesn't spike at all unless my Video Card is overheating. My Quake III Runs fine now since I've downgraded my drivers.

    The X1950 Pro is not an older card, the only thing that would be considered old is the AGP bus it runs on, but many Sapphire cards run on an AGP bus. You can even get a HD 3850 512MB GDDR3 in AGP, so really, the shoddy AGP support on ATi drivers is a pretty big issue. A lot of people don't use PCI-E yet, for all of us, going from AGP to PCI-E pretty much means we buy a totally new PC.
