Hello – I’m hoping someone can help me with a problem I’m having. I play World of Warcraft and normally have on average 45-55 fps. For the past month or so I’ve been having issues in the morning or whenever I restart my computer where my fps will go from 45-50 to 2 or 3 for about a minute and then go back to 45-50. This will rinse and repeat for about an hour or so and then will stop completely.

I thought that this could just be an internet issue but the same thing happens when I’m play Sims 2. I can’t see the actual framerates but when I “scroll” through the game to get to other areas in the house it’s very sluggish at times and then goes back to normal. I can also see this when I’m playing app games on Facebook, like Farmville.

I’ve checked my processes and couldn’t see anything that shouldn’t be running. I ran my spybot program and avg and nothing glaring came up. I did a reinstall of Windows XP and did a defrag when I saw that I had over 100k fragmented files. (I don’t defrag often!) Nothing has helped or changed this.

The only thing I did notice during my searches on my system was all of my system restore points were gone and Service Pack 2 had been uninstalled off of my computer.

    Any ideas or thoughts?

    Hi

If you have re-installed XP then your version of XP will revert to the version you have on the XP original CD or Restore Partition/Disk if from an OEM like Dell, HP etc, so if you only had XP RTM or XP SP1 version then your SP2 or SP3 will be gone, likewise with any restore points as a re-install wipes them clear.

Or if reinstall means something else and you didnt need to reinstall all your games and application etc please mention what you did as re-install could be a repair install or a clean install?

What possibly could be happening if you did re-install is that you are missing the latest drivers for your hardware, this would cause framerate issues, or you dont hav latest Adobe Flash or Sun Java installed, could also cause issues in games.

So what is the version of XP you have now, by that I mean is it back at SP2/SP3 or not, if not then what are you using, click Start > Run and type winver and hit enter, and what does it say near top? (should say Windows version 5.1 and then a load of text, whats in the text)

What security applications do you have installed and please name them all, as too many of the same ilk can cause slowness in a PC?

What is the Make and Model of your PC if from say Dell, HP etc, if not then what is your motherboard + Graphic Card make and model and the below guide can help you find this as we may need to update your drivers.

No, SP2 and my restore points were gone BEFORE I did the reinstall of XP. All of the framerate issues I am having were there before the XP reinstall. I did the XP reinstall as a trial and error of sorts to see if I could figure out what was going on.

I haven’t reinstalled SP2 since I did the reinstall of XP yesterday. I still need to do that. I have updated all drivers for the motherboard, gfx card, etc. after the XP reinstall.

The security applications I use are Spybot Search & Destory and AVG

The specs of my system are:

    Processor: AMD Athlon X2 4600+ 2.4GHz (Dual Core) (1 MB Cache) w/HyperTransport
Motherboard: Asus M2N SLI Deluxe (nForce 570 SLI)
Memory: 2GB DDR2 Corsair at 667MHz (Dual Channel)
Gfx Card: nVidia GeForce 8500GTX 512MB eVGA brand

I was having similar problems with my games(and my internet browsers) and nobody seemed like they knew what was going on.

I stumbled across a few posters in the software forums that were talking about a game software that sped up games and is downloadable here. I downloaded these 2 programs

    http://majorgeeks.com/Game_Booster_d5952.html

Can use this to auto shutoff non needed programs when you want to game. It also defrags each game if you want.

    and this

    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=5927

which is another spyware removal program that also cleans up junk files, a privacy sweep(cleans up browsers of old bs you dont need), and repairs registry errors.

I used both of these programs(the second one when it scans your pc you can check and uncheck what you want it to delete so make sure you check to see if its deleting things you want to keep) and my pc runs much faster, browsers don't auto reload or stop working all of a sudden, and my games seem to run from at least a little to extremely better.

I think my problem was mostly the 185 registry errors it found and the fact you can defrag each game separately may be the key.

Hope this helps some. If not, then just punch me. ;)

Hi Siobhan, do you connect via a modem or router? Router is better if it's always on, allows most versions of DSL to hold a better connection.

Games are pretty heavy on RAM, graphics memory, virtual memory and hard drive data read/writes; to help you optimise the PC for this type of use, that Everest report would be very useful ^_^
