so i was trying to format a 80 gb maxtor h.d. thats less than a year old i went to my computer and the hard drive wasnt there. so i restart and go into bios to make sure auto select is on for slave drive and while i was there i decide to mess around and overclock the fsb. I turn it on it works great but still no hard drive it showed up in device manager but not in my computer

    sorry i got cut off.
anyways i turn off the computer and now the screen does nothing .Everything starts just fine i can hear the original hard drive power up the dvd rom powers up the keyboard light comes on but the monitor stays in sleep mode. Ive tried three monitors , diffrent hard drives , h.d cables , no h.d. , swapped my ram around tryed ram out of my old computer
tryed a diffrent vid card a hercules 3d prophet 4500 that like 5 years old so im not sure if it would even work in my downed computer but i tried it anyway still nothing.
whats going on with this thing?
    thanks, Jason

I'm assuming that you are wanting to add the drive as extra storage!!??

If so...what you want to do, is use the windows setup cd to partition the drive, and then when you boot up into windows...go to my computer and right click on the new slave drive, and then click on format!!

Also...most relatively recent computers work better if you put the jumpers on all drives at CS (cable select) then the bios sorts it out according to where on the cable the drive is plugged in...so that being said...what jumper are you using??

yes i need the extra storage and i do have both hd on cable selct i have formated a few hard drives on this computer before for freinds so they can install a fresh o.s.
the problem is when i start my computer the monitor does not respond.

well i got the damn thing to work.
ther is a cmos ram on board that has a power supply from from external battery to keep data config.
so i just cleared the cmos by shorting the pins then putting them back and it turn back on like nothing ever happend.

Glad you got it resolved...apparently, the overclocking made it too unstable!!

set my bios to the default and everythings great but i still cant seem to get the maxtor hard drive to show up in my computer.
in disk mangment it shows up as disk 1 unknown 6.89gb not intialized and when i try to intilize it the mouse turns to the hour glass for a second and then nothing.
i gotta keep messin with it and do more research.
ive never had this much trouble with a hard drive before. damn you maxtor
