I'm not sure if this is the place, but can anyone suggest software similar to Photoshop.

    Thanks in advance.

Simple answer: Paint.net or GIMP are the closest to Photoshop I believe.

More: Inkscape will give you vectoring ability and the ability to create scalable graphics (they don't lose their original resolution like resized/rescaled photos). There is a great tool in Inkscape that will automatically trace vectors for you, too.

Paint.net vs GIMP: Paint.net is not a vectoring program by any means, but there are a very large number of extensions/plugins that add alot of functionality to the program. Support is good for both programs, and the communities are good, so that helps. Don't know much about GIMP, but there are alot of believers in the program. It's another program with alot of support. GIMP has a paths tool, but it's not a vectoring program like Inkscape. No paths tool in Paint.net :(.

If you would like to perform/learn vectoring, you can choose between GIMP and Paint.net and then add Inkscape to perform the actual vectoring procedures.

The way I see it, if you want to create normal unscalable graphics or if you just want to work with pics, Paint.net or GIMP by themselves should be fine. I admit that the paths tool in GIMP is missed in Paint.net, though. The plugins make up for that in many ways and, again, there is always Inkscape for paths and vectoring.

I actually enjoy working with the two programs, Paint.net and Inkscape, which is what I choose to do for now. I am hoping there will be a paths tool in Paint.net at some point, though...
