What I have also "privately" asked ....no reason to keep it a secret ...is if it might be possible to set up an "endowment" where by MG's members might donate spare parts so that computers could be built to give to those that might be in need ...not a public type thing ....just a private "screening" of posts that might result in the offer to a family. I assume, old P1's and P2's are out of the question to be donated? I do have an ancient compaq I believe.

After a little more thought applied to this ....it could be a huge PITA to screen, assemble, and ship any donated computers ....so maybe what needs doing is a list of links to as many sites, organizations that provide free or reduced priced (refurbished ...or with DHS referrals) computers and have the links on the front page as a "resources" type page.

    Any thoughts on this twist?

Since there are groups out there already doing a pretty good job of that, a reference page pointing to where help is already available would probably be better. A couple years ago we (the MG forum regulars) sort of adopted a family trying to raise 22 kids by themselves, due to the death of one sister and a promise from each other years back to "take care of each other's kids in case of..". We figured out who was willing to donate what, quite a few good folks from all over shipped stuff mostly to me IIRC, I put one puter together down here, eclayton did another box up in Chicago, and I added a stop with the Claytons to a family trip to Chicago to combine resources and finish things, and he and his wife got them delivered to the family, with a lot of software to boot. Kodo set up and hosted a website highlighting their story and asking for donations. Was fun and rewarding, but was a fair amount of effort and communication exchange just to get things together. Efforts like that really need to be localized to help those near them for the long haul.

Another good idea for the link page is to suggest that those with old parts they don't need donate them either to a local group of their own, or to one of the ones linked from the page. There are a LOT of groups out there doing this.

A quick Google search for "free computers charity" pulled up this; mostly useful places.

@G.T. Heard about that effort - monumental and all deserve kudo's for a hard job done well ....

I think that with some input from others, this could be a wonderful resource for people ...esp. if we could cover each state ....people without, or with outdated, may just not know what is out there for them.

Guess this is a resurrection of the old thread about new pages on MG's....
