(Sorry if there are threads about this; I searched, but didn't find any)

Is there any good software out there for playing DVDs that is free and fully functional (e.g. supports 5.1 sound, screen capture, etc). I currently use a trial/free version of NVDVD that came with a video card awhile ago, but am limited in the "fully functional" department (such as only being able to use 2 channel sound and no frame capture).

Along with VLC, you need ac3filter. Just do a Google, and download/install it. You'll get full DD 5.2 functionality.
