Get this - my neighbors are apparently moving and they put a bunch of computer stuff out on the side of the road. I disregarded it as junk the first couple of days. Monday I decided to see what was out there. I picked up everything except a couple keyboards and a lone speaker. In this lot of parts was a complete HP Pavilion 533w. The specs are as follows:

    Intel Celeron 2.0GHz
    256MB DDR PC2100
    60GB Samsung HDD
    Unknown optical drive
    Onboard video and sound

When I got the PC to the shop, it wouldn't power on at all. I unplugged the ATX connector on the power supply and shorted the PWR_ON wire to ground. This usually switches the power supply on, but this time it didn't. So I take a new ATX power supply and install it. Now the PC will power on, but the fans rev up and down and no video ever comes up on the screen. I checked the HP PSU and noticed that the white wire was not used on the ATX connector. So I remove that wire from the new PSU and the same thing still happens.

Out of all of the searching I've done, I have not found anything to tell me if this power supply will work or not.

When I took the original power supply apart, I saw that the ciruit traces around the bridge rectifier were burnt. It's very possible that lightning struck this PSU because it has struck the cable coax on the power pole that we share with this neighbor.

Anyone got any ideas as to how to fix this? I'm already shopping for a cheap case since this one has been ripped apart cosmetically. I'd be willing to buy a mobo, if that's all that I need. The HDD passed full diags, so I atleast have some free storage.

The PSU I'm using now is brand new and should feed the correct voltages. I'm going to take the mobo out in a few minutes and look for any burns. Then I'll test the PSU.

Ahh so your testing the mobo then, unhook the ac,remove any add on cards and harddrives, use only one stick of memory in dimm 0,remove the cmos battery for 5 secs and replace, try firing it up :)

It's alive! I tried your suggestion, Rikky, which caused the fans to spin up then stop immediately. So I go back to my Dell days and removed everything from the case and put it on the bench. Still got the same thing. So I remove everything except PSU, mobo, and CPU. This gave me some memory beeps during POST. I put a new stick of memory in and BOO_YAH! there's the HP splash screen. Thanks for the help, Rikky!

I had a similar problem with an older HP. It would power on then immediately stop. I tried all kinds of things; motherboard switches, etc. Finally, I found the original keyboard that came with it, which had a space bar-power on feature. With the correct keyboard it works fine.
