I don't have MS Word so I've been using Apache Open Office 4.1.2 for years now. It works OK but is, for me, is very overly complicated compared to Word. FYI, I haven't have Word since I had XP years ago...I am not paying MS's prices for something that should be included with the computer at purchase.

Does anyone know of a free or cheap replacement for MS Word that works like, and is comparable with, MS Word?

I suggest you try Kingsoft Office 2013 9.1.0.4550 Free.
The bold number is important because the latest free version adds a watermark to printed pages and to pages exported to pdf.
It includes Writer, Spreadsheets & Presentation. I downloaded this version in 2014 and the only downside is while .pptx files can be opened, edited & exported to pdf, they can't be saved. Fortunately .docx & .xlsx files can be opened, edited, saved & exported to pdf.
Also, you can choose the old toolbar UI in about 9 different colours, or the new ribbon UI. Backup the downloaded setup file because soon you'll not find it.

If all you need is something to open doc and docx files and write some notes, I have been using AbiWord
http://www.abiword.org/ on one of my Win 7 computers.
I have the portable version because i didn't want to install it.

I just checked and my version is 2.8.6 , the same as on the portable apps page.
You have the option to save as in lots o formats including doc and docx, rtf, txt, and lots of others.

    Thanks I'll look into those.

Question Eldon; why would I want a watermark and would the watermark be mine or Kingsoft's?

    Kingsoft's.
This software was great but now... Well, all good things come to an end. And I'm refering to the latest free version.
Back in 2012 you could have downloaded the individual programs - Writer, Spreadsheets and/or Presentation. But no more. And now the watermark.

FYI If you select the toolbar UI, you are going to think you're using MSO 2003.

I think all he needs is something like Word so paying for an old version of Office with parts he'll never use would be a waste of money when there are good free alternatives.
