This is a little more easier said than done.

You could either buy Linux in a box with the CD's pre-burned for you. Probably between 30-40 dollars (nothing like the over $100 dolars for Windows). But the OS is free, if you can download all the ISO images and burn them to CD.

The images are about 600MB each or more, so you need a fast connection and a computer with a CD Burner. You also need to know what distribution you want. Fedora, Mandrake, Suse, Linspire.

I recommend either Linspire 4.5 or Fedora Core 2.

You can get Fedora Core 2 easily by navigating to it from www.redhat.com.

    Good Luck.

Personally, I'd go with a based Debian distro (this server runs on it!).

I borrowed KNOPPIX from a friend. i was wondering if i could run it without the CD, if i could install programs, and if i can go on the net.

im pretty sure it could go on the net since it has Firefox, but everypage i type in doesnt work.

I think KNOPPIX is meant to run from the CD. The new SuSe Linux has a similar idea. They offer a "LIVE-CD" version of 9.1, meaning you can boot off of the CD and test the OS w/o installing. Than you can download the install CD(s) if you like it. I was able to browse the internet, network and access media drives while booted from the CD.

    You can't :)

    Sorry.

You should be able to find XMMS which is available for linux. Chances are its bundled in your installation.

Knoppix can be installed to the HDD...
Wait till the system is fully launched, including the KDE desktop

Press CTRL-ALT-F1, to get a root console. You should see a shell prompt

    Type: knx-hdinstall

Follow the guided installation menus. This will include:

Creating a Linux partition (at least 2.5GB
Creating a Linux Swap partition (at least 256MB)
'Mounting' the Linux partition as root
    Initialising the swap partition
Copying all the required files (automatically)
    Setting up networking
    Setting passwords
Setting up the bootloader (Note: take care with this stage - it could render your system incapable of booting into Windows. If you really need Windows, then it might be a good idea to set up GRUB Bootloader with a 'chainloader' entry, so that you can dual boot. Working this out is an exercise left to the reader - there are too many possible scenarios for me to cover in this short guide. Also see man grub and the files in /usr/share/doc/grub)
    Rebooting (without the CD)
