Free Ram XP

A while back, I posted a prob where my 'puter would just decide to restart itself. This happend maybe a half-dozen times, both on and offline. At first, there seemed to be no rhyme nor reason for this prob.

One day, however, I couldn't load my ID, although my wife's would load ok. When I clicked on my name, it would call up my desktop, than the 'puter would restart. I observed this sequence a few times, maybe 4 or 5, and it seemed to happen when "FreeRAMXP" would try to load itself in the system tray.

I removed this prog from my systray with XPepius, but have not yet uninstalled it. Anyone else had probs with this prog? Recommendations for any RAM optimizer progs are appreciated-or do they even have a noticable effect on performance? This machine has been a lot better than ever since you guys helped me straighten it out but let's face it-15 years as an aviation maintenance technician means that I just like to keep tweaking and tweaking..........

To be honest XP manages memory better without any of the 3rd party memory managers, XP is not the black memory hole that the 9x versions are.

    I would uninstall.

    Halo-
I suspected as much, but wanted to hear it from someone who actually knows how these things work!!

Been using Windows since version 3, so it's hard to get used to a version that actually manages memory in an efficient manner!! I've never gotten the BIOS thing figured out (I have a Prescott processor) even though I did the "hotfix" from Microsoft. Other than the phantom restarts, this machine kicks a** like it never has before, so overall I'm quite pleased.

Waiting to hear from the Mobo manf. on the BIOS thing; I'll post the results later......

Well this is odd...I actually disagree with you to a point Halo.:D Here's why...

If the user is talking about FreeRAM XP Pro 1.40 I have used this program with no problems almost since XP was first released. B/C of all the graphics stuff I do, I run out of RAM fast. XP IMO holds on to a lot more than is necessary when using these programs. If I 'don't' use something to free up my RAM I find that after a while my graphics programs will just close/crash without warning UNLESS I take the time manually close my program, reboot, then start my program again. Using FreeRAM I've never had any of my graphics program crash and I can fiddle with stuff all day without the need to reboot. *shrug* Does the trick for me.:D

I have tried other proggies to manage my RAM but I always go back to FreeRAM XP Pro for it's stability, efficiency and small footprint.

@ jtone...I wonder if something in your configuration settings has been inadvertently checked?...there is quite a bit there and 'some' of the settings if enabled/disabled can and will mess things up. Assuming you have already checked them I would double check them all...we won't talk about how much time "I" spent this morning trying to turn off an image toolbar and how many times I OVERLOOKED the setting!:D:D LOL

Fair point Abby, I wouldnt disagree if it works for you then its good to have, personally I have never seen the benefits it gave in 9x over XPs own memory managment.

how much Ram are you both using? *I have the curiosity of a cat*

I have 512mb on my main PC, which I use Photoshop a known memory hog and dont seem to suffer any ill effects, especially as I generally have a few other programs open, Word, IE.....

What I "may" have done different to you both is to adjust alot of registry settings ( and a bit of playing with VM & PS scratch disk locations/sizes ) the notable one could be to force XP to unload DLLs once they have been finished with as XP is known to hang onto them once an app is closed, which in turn could cause loss/lack of memory for any new apps?!

jtone... Abbys advice would be well worth following and check all the settings, I would if you keep the app, be inclined to not have it run at boot but use it when you need to grasp some memory back?
