I wonder how that will play out with the region coding in DVDs. Non-geeks that can't get around region coding on computer DVD drives, and stand alone DVD players that are hard-coded will likely choke on them.

GT, I was gonna point out about region codes, non compatible players, etc. Let the buyer beware and read the manuals that come with players, or ask fellow DVD owners. I bought a region free DVD player for AU$99 last Christmas and it works great.

Even for USA readers, alone, this is a good offer IMHO.

DVD Region KIller Tray v2.5.0.2 works great on PC's, and my laptop, to overcome region coding.

"Read the info on this site link under Product Description before installing this version.
RegionKiller 2 takes care of the proper functioning of your (Region Code free) DVD Drive - from now on you`ll be able to watch foreign DVDs on your home theater PC without being hassled by possibly non-working DVDs. "

Hope this clarifies things a bit. Bazza

I'm not too worried about geeks like us. I was thinking more of the guys that used to have 12:00 flashing on their VCRs continually because they never learned how to set the clock. ;)

    Whats a VCR?

I cant even get DVD's to work on my pc anymore
and I don't know why. . .something about the coding or something to keep pirates away. . .

That stopped a few years ago when Panasonic made a teletext updating VCR which has an automatic startup procedure. Tunes all the channels, sets the clock and all the other settings most people cant be bothered to set :D

Now everyone is doing it! TVs are great, you just plug em in and they tune themself! Kinda freaky though :p

Oh yes and region encoding... ha haa... I managed to make my own DVD player reigon free... i had to do a bit of soldering and replacing inside the unit, but I did it and it works fine! :D

hmm, I'm pretty sure Panasonic made it first with a (rather expensive) Home VCR... I saw it on Tomorows world as if it was the most amazing thing ever. It might well have been 10 years ago... It was definatley at least 7... I know that.

We all get sidetracked in the Lounge occasionally. The point of the post was that free shipping was/is available on DVD's etc., from the site quoted. Maybe to USA folks, free shipping is common, but not to us International folks. Also the USA has a better range of DVD's than most other countries. I buy DVD's from the UK, USA, or whatever, if I can't find what I want in OZ, so free shipping is a bonanza to me. Bazza

JVC called it Plug and Play.

I just threw the machine away (it died about 6 months ago). It was a discontinued model when I bought it in 95. It would scan the TV channels for a signal and set the time that way. It even would do an auto scan for the channels and program into the VCR.

Maybe it was a USA thing... Panasonic (and subsiduarys) seem to shift more stuff here in AV (reletivley speaking, of course ;) ). I just remember a 90's TV presenter with a top-loading VCR machine saying "Does this machine look like your home video player?". dispite the fact it was massivley outdated even in 1993... "Well, this horizontal loading slimline machine will let you record onto tapes without any hassle at all. Simply plug in, and the advanced electronics will configure itself inteligently" ... etc. etc. I think they had somthing about electrostat speakers too, which wern't at all new at the time either.

heh, my VCR does that too, but I'm just too lazy to set the clock, got 3 clocks in this small room anyway, don't need a fourth one :)
