I've got only 4 GB of free space left on my Hardrive.

Whats the most effective way of looking at whats on my Hardrive so I can see if I have alot of stuff I can delete or if I need to go in another direction.

Really, just looking. I would start with CCleaner to get rid of temporary files and unneeded stuff.

    http://majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_d4191.html

Control Panel, add\remove programs uninstall what you dont use. Optionally from there, go to add\remove Windows Components and remove stuff you dont use like games, mouse cursors, etc.

You might then want to browse the ProgramFiles folder to remove any folders that were left behind from uninstalled programs.

In Internet Explorer, you might want to go to options, temporary internet files settings and slide the bar to the right to store less temporary files. This is a good idea for anyone with small hard drives.

P.S After all that cleanup, do a defrag. Buying a small hard drive for storage and backup might be a good idea.

Run the disk defragmenter after u cleanup, in fact do these regularly bfore the drive starts running out of space.

Silvius, we dont appreciate linking out here, especially when you use a post to send him to articles that are pretty crappy and dont cover as much as he will get removed from my steps. They are "cute" articles for drawing in the typical PC World reader so they all warm and fuzzy because they "cleaned" their computers up, while in reality they accomplished very little.

I dont know anyone who uses disk cleanup, both of those articles are borderline idiotic, you won't get much cleaned up with disk cleanup built into Windows. My personal favorite is a site called "pctechguide" saying to run disk cleaner, then scandisk, then defrag. LOL!

Looking at your computer from a tree view with the other program is of no help. If you didnt uninstall it, then the larger directories you spot using it cant be deleted anyhow.

In closing, Windows Disk Cleaner, lol, too funny :)

Small question, do any of the defag programs put all the free space together? The IBM Sytem 34 had a compression program that allowed allocation of free space spread across however many drives you had or put all files on drive 0 and the free space spread from there. Depending on optimization to cut down on seek time, large look up files like customer base could be on drive 0, inventory on drive 1 and invoice file being generated could on drive2. Anything like that exist for a PC??
