I get a lot of freeze ups because of lack of memory. Do I need a memory manager? Or are they just fluff?

Is there a memory manager out there that is considered the best? Computer Shopper's top 50 free downloads had RAMbooster 1.6 and FreeRAM XP Pro 1.4.

Also MyIE 2 was highly lauded browser in recent issue of PC World? Any thoughts?

    Welcome to MG's!

I personally never used one of these memory managers so you will have to wait for someone else to comment on that but I assume you are running XP? How much memory do you have? First I think you need to check exactly what you have got running that is using all your memory. Check what startup programs you are loading. What does Task Manager show?

As of the above .. go for more physical memory .. there is no substitute..
A lot of ram boosters 'or such , just flush to page file [hard disk ram]..
AS Cowboy stated Cacheman is great..
M$ States that Pagefile on Xp should 1.5 per physical ram..
    I personally have 512 Mbs Corsair [256x2]..
And set my page file min = 766 , Max 766...
    No Probs either..
    Cheers ..

I'm maxed as far as memory. I have 3rd physical slot for 128 more but it doesn't recognize the 3rd stick.

Old cheapo here doesn't want to spend $25 with a potential freebee around.

A ram defragger is good for systems with a lot loaded at startup, but other than that I would never use one...

    Ram memory manager

    Rapier,
FWIW, I use Analog X MaxMem from http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/system/maxmem.htm

It's free, works on my PC with 288mb Ram (maxed out). Runs automatically every 5 minutes or so which can be inconvenient sometimes but it is easily shut down.I don't bother, but then I am not a games player or using some prog that may object.

There are 3 levels of "cleaning" and these are user configurable. Have used it for months with no probs. A hint, run it after booting up into Windows. Note down the memory free figure when you load it and then after you have run it. You will see the difference.

It frees/re-arranges a lot of memory (in 98SE which doesn't handle memory as well as later OS's). Hope this helps. Baz

    Hi Rapier
I personally use Cacheman XP and would reccomend it to anybody
But you could also help yourself, visit blackvipers site follow the instructions to disable all the services you dont need
    http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

Also do you have a lot of programs autorunning at start-up just sitting in the notification area using up precious resources
Go to Start-- Run--Type MSCONFIG-- OK-- look for the start-up tab and cross reference all the listings on this site and uncheck the boxes of the unneeded programs press apply and ok, you will be prompted to reboot
Once rebooted you will recieve a pop-up window just check the box dont show me this message again ;)

A bit of research on your part can reap some benefit :D

    Any questions just ask

    Answers were correct:

Cacheman is a true memory solution, not a "freeing" utility. Many of them use memory to release and are fluff. If Cacheman does not work, you have a simple problem of removing sticks for sticks with more memory on them. There is no better solution.
