I should read the article, but, I think this only relates to NEW buys, not those who've bought xp 5 years ago (today is xp's b'day!).

It'd have to be a pretty crappy new computer that didn't get to mirage.. sorry vista min specs except perhaps for memory (where a gig is the go). I think it only needs one ghz(crawl)
I wonder how many computerphobes would know how to install their new vista os when it arrives. Some would install over xp so it would be crap.
I can smell a stuff up. (Remember those mums and dads who bought office pro for $200 but were only getting a years licence. This broke Bill's heart and he gave it to them...sniff.)

Funny enough those senario's have been tested alot during this years testing, Microsoft devs on thr Vista project urged the techbeta testers to do as many XP SP2 upgrades and clean installs as possible, and to see how easy it would be for new PC users or novices to install/upgrade, personally I think they ahev made this as easy as possible.

I have to say while I would always go the clean install route, the upgrade went well, Vista's install setup is much much better than XP and pretty simple and quick to run, a clean install on my PC took less than 30mins from setup to a working GUI.

Only issues I can see are with older PCs and the possible lack of driver support as yet if you early adopt, but this is not a MS failing but that of 3rd party devs.

Thanks for the heads up Halo.
The first os I installed was ME but it developed the ME freeze on install issue. After several attempts I decided to leave the instal running over night because it seemed to be advancing..slowly. In the morning it was still installing so I phoned a friend (I should have used ask the audience earlier)
Then when xp came around I decided to play safe and dual boot but it developed the known dual boot issue with me and xp. I think it goes
"xp before me (except after c) or is it the other way around?
After twenty installs and a few phone calls to microsoft asking me why I had activated my xp twenty times in two days... I finally had a working computer and a nasty case of newosophobia.
"My name is Goose and I am an newosophobic."
Now after five years of major geeks therapy I have one linux and three xp partitions(because i can) but I wonder if anyone is ever really cured of newosophobia.

    No I have craposophobia. Difference.

I'm using a Vista laptop at this moment. It's weird. I don't really like it much - I certainly won't be going out of my way to get Vista when it comes out.

I haven't got a beta but a review of vista from someone I trust said that it was the most significant advance since win95. Yet the article left me feeling that it was an eye candy and slower than xp. Especially since its been stripped of the promised filing system, virtual folders and secure computing envoir.
Microsoft must hire some of the best but you'd have to wonder about a giant soul crushing dilbert cartoon. Where is the innovation?

I've posted this multiple times. But, I'll post here here also.

    @goose.

I've upgraded my xp pro to beta 2, RC1, pre RC2, and finally RC2 (5744). With no huge issues.

I'll probably get it when I purchase a new computer in 3 months. Urgh, the stupid case is going to cost me $300.

I told a friend about Vista (co-worker), and he stated that he'll wait for sp1 for Vista.

But, after trying it out (my friend), he's going to get it for his home network (5 computers + server).

    Halo,
If someone buys an xp computer with an upgrade coupon, will he or she even have the chance of doing a clean install?

I might buy a new pc, then get the Vista OS that comes with it, and then sell it for a higher price :)

Won't matter for most folks, but for the hard-core home-builder, Vista's new EULA is less friendly than XP's. Vista supposedly considers a new motherboard to be a NEW computer, regardless, and will allow ONE transfer to a "new" computer. On your second motherboard upgrade, you'll have to buy a new copy. If XP had those terms, I'd have had to buy 3 copies by now. Plus, I see no point in upgrading to the 32 bit version of Vista, and 64 bit drivers and apps will take a while to be implemented. Unless DX10 ships and is adopted fairly quickly by games, and is as great as it's supposed to be, I'll be quite happy to stay with XP for a while longer.

Not if it is OEM, which will be tied to your computer. :)

I'd have to dig up the article, but I believe you can activate your vista copy up to 10 times.

So, if you replaced your mobo 5 times, then you hdd (with another piece of hardware) 5 more times, then you will have to get another vista copy. Or just re-isntall xp.

Only 2 major hardware related items have I upgraded on my pc in 3 years.. CPU and video card.

I believe you're talking about the RC builds. I haven't seen anything like that for RTM. This guy is a bit wordy but he gets his point across, especially when dealing with Paul Thurrott.

Peripheral hardware, yes. Motherboards, no. A friend of mine was able to sit in on a web meeting with the MS Vista team on 10/27, and saved the session. From their Q&A session:
That's probably comforting to those that don't upgrade their motherboards, but not for the geeky home-builder.

I know this has come up before, but I don't remember where. Probably in the WGA discussion. I find Microsoft deserves some competition. If I needed a kitchen sink and the company wouldn't allow me to buy it but only to lease it, I still wouldn't expect them to tell me I could move it around in my kitchen or deinstall it and reinstall it 5 or 10 times or any other number of times. Microsoft is not so much in the business of selling software as they are in the business of offending people through the tactics they've used and been allowed to use to create a near monopoly. Anti-trust laws were created for a reason.
    Sorry for the rant.

I wonder how this couldn't fall foul of some consumer rights law somewhere. Contracts can't negate laws as far as I am aware even if both parties have agreed.
Our government (Aust) seems keen to put their monikers on whatever bills big buis wants. (Or should that be perform a Monica on any Bill they want.) Our Drm laws are shockers.
