FreeRAM and other memory clearing programs

Hey guys, I'm new here. I just built a new PC and am looking for ways too make it run as smoothly, stably, and quickly as possible. A friend of mine told me about FreeRAM, and I liked the idea of that, so I got it and am currently running it. However, some other people then told me that memory-freeing programs like that are a waste of system space, that Win XP has a fine memory optimizer anyway, yadda yadda. I can't really tell the difference with and without it, because to me, who was running some pretty ancient hardware before, it seems pretty blazing fast all the time. So what do you guys advise? Is FreeRAM worthwhile, or is the built-in Windows optimizer better? More importantly, is FreeRAM safe to use, or is it hard on my memory?

The one built into windows is good I dont know about the FreeRam product...but for your computer to run better you should have atleast 512mb of ram.

Hmm... ok, anyone know anything more about FreeRAM? Or, if the Windows XP default memory clearer is good, is there a way to tweak with it (change settings so it does it more often, or whatever)? Also, just for reference, I have a gig of RAM, and my PC runs just fine the way it is... I'm just trying to set it up so that it continues to run as smoothly as possible in the long run. :)

Windows does somewhat sufficiently IMO, however I use CachemanXP (the free limited version) as it lets me retrieve RAM from individual processes if I want to.

for a computer with 512MB RAM or less, i highly recommend it. For your case, you might not notice a difference too much, since the only time you will be using a lot of RAM is during a game or video rendering

Ok, cool. Well, as long as it's safe, I think I'll continue using it, anyway. At the very least, it's cool seeing how much RAM I'm using at any given time.
