Freeze on start up & explorer.exe crash with vista

Hi All,

When I start up my computer the screen always goes white, usually for a couple of minutes then it starts normally. However, sometimes it will stay with a white screen and I end up having to turn the power off and then on again.

Secondly, when I try to open the "computer" folder the window will open but no icons will show. The address bar will fill up like it is searching for the drives and this can take a few minutes. More often than not explorer.exe will stop responding and restart. I have resorted to just avoiding that folder.

I don't know if these two problems are related but they seemed to first show at the same time when I filled my hard drive. I have since cleared some memory but the issues remain.

Vista home premium x32
2.17Ghz processor
3 GB RAM

Did you run any full virus or spyware scans yet? Try that.

Also, pop in your Windows disc and see if you can run Startup Repair at boot up to be sure.

 

Ran full scans with avast and malwarebytes in safe mode.

I will have a look for the disc.

Are there no kind of tools that could diagnose the explorer.exe problem?

 

Try System File Checker.

Go to Run -> sfc /scannow and let it do its thing.

 

done the "scannow" it reported errors it cannot fix, and I am unable to open the log. Any ideas?
