Freezes, not turning on, then no video...

I got and installed a new motherboard and Processor,

    http://www.amazon.com/AMD-Phenom-Si...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1309719183&sr=1-1

The computer ran fine for the first day, but on the second it froze up as i was reading a yahoo news article, it did not unfreeze and i had to shut off the computer. It wouldnt turn back on at first, which made me worried something fried, though i couldnt find any evidence of it. A green light on the motherboard was on during this time (even when i had the power supply unplugged. A few hours later when i tried it again it turned on.

This happened again later, freeze then fail to turn on. This time i noticed the power cable from the cases power button to the mother supply came loose, it turned on fine just after this. I was on my desktop playing Dungeon Crawl, essentially a indie nethack clone.

The third time nothing happened for several hours, and it did eventually turn on, i heard three clicks from the hard drive, which leads me to believe that is failing or something along those lines, and my monitor is getting no video whatsoever. Hard drive is the oldest thing in my computer, 4 years old, and i wish i could blame it for everything, but i dont think it would stop the computer from turning on, or from getting a video signal. I have also tried the monitor connected to my ati 4670 hd card, and the onboard card with no results from either.

So it seems like its the new motherboard, but im not 100% sure and would love to blame the hard drive. Also a tad worried it could be the new processor, but i haven't seen its temperature surpass 45c even when playing ARMA 2 on almost maxed settings. Also the freezes didn't occur when i played games with heavy requirements.

I would be thankful for any assistance to better pinpoint the exact cause of these issues.

I went ahead and made sure the monitor worked on a different computer. I guess that really just leaves the motherboard at fault... unless a bad processor could cause video to not be outputted?

    hmm

What were your old PC specs and did you only replace MB and CPU. what PSU do you have? and what RAM do you have.

Your issues sound like heat to me. What did you use to get your reading of 45c?

I think it unlikely to be your hard disk. An easy way to tell is just unplug it and turn PC on. if it POSTs then you might have an argument for it being HD but its unlikely.

    Only changed mb and cpu.

Power supply is 500w -i believe its this model
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817116003

Corsair 4GB (2x2gb) Dual Channel Corsair DDR3 Memory

I used Speedfan for a bit, but i changed to Core Temp ( http://majorgeeks.com/Core_Temp_d5665.html ) which recorded the temps, generally ranging from 27c idle and 35-40 during intensive games, only saw 45c once when i tried maxing out everything in arma 2 and after a few hours of gameplay.

And i have no idea if its the hard drive or not since i cant tell if i get post since the monitor isnt getting any video at all from the computer, even with HD unplugged (though it works fine with another computer).

I mentioned this problem to my instructor in a prep a+ cert class and he said it sounded like a power supply issue, or maybe a bad capacitor on the motherboard. Forgot to tell him issues persisted after gpu was removed which i imagine wouldn't stress the 500w, though as a precaution im gonna get a 575w and try it with that. Think if it fails to fix anything im gonna exchange the mobo back to amazon for another one.

Im happy its not heat HD or RAM.

It could be PSU but if it worked before I think it unlikely to be PSU. I would prob go with motherboard. I would RMA it before you buy new new PSU.

Well i knew that the power usuage had to be close to i went ahead and got a new power supply, 630w over my old 500w.

Well it didnt get video when i originally tried it, but i tried it a second time, and walla video. Doesnt get past bios though, i get 3 lines of text

No Keyboard detected! (Not connected as i was just trying it)
    Chassis intruded !
    Fatal Error... System Halted.

So... leaning towards the motherboard at fault still, any more thoughts before i send it back to amazon on monday?

it didnt get video the next time, but after that it booted into windows but blue screened at the login time, after that any further attempt was met with no video from start up...

Disconnect everything that is not needed to POST. ie everthing but Motherboard, RAM, CPU, PSU and GPU then see what happens (if you have onboard GPU use that rather than PSU. If it still wont POST, take all the components out of the case set the motherboard on a non conductive surface such as wood or card and then see if it will post. This will rule out any shorting or grounging faults. If it still wont POST try the RAM and PSU back in your old MB and CPU. If that posts then it is probably MB failure.

Well it decided not to turn on anymore, again.

Cant really test the ram in the old motherboard as the new one is ddr3 and the old is ddr2. Old motherboard was also am2+ while new one is am3 so i cant try that separately, though i don't think a processor would cause these problems.

Had the same result from gpu and onboard video when i removed the normal card, which was no video. Everything has been disconnected that was necessary for my prior attempts, so i think it has to be the motherboard at this point. Think ill get ready tomorrow or Tuesday to send it back to amazon.

I'll double-check everything on the inside on a wood table i have and see if i can get it to start again, but everything appears to be hooked up fine, at least according to the motherboard manual, and the case is connected to the motherboard alright.

Uggg, so apparently it will boot up on the wooden kitchen table, but not on the computer slot my wooden desk has. Damn walmart junk. Alright, well besides that still no video most of the time, and when i do get video (10 tries, 2 times with video) it freezes up loading into windows.

Going to keep any further attempts on the kitchen table, till i replace said desk, though i never had any trouble before with the previous setup.

I agree with sending the MB back. see where you go then.
