Before I start, it's a laptop, so opening it up and reseating/inspecting isn't exactly easy. I could, but I'd like to save that for the last possible option.

Sometimes my computer will freeze for about .5 seconds and then my screen will go black. Black like "not even on" black, not just a cut signal or anything. My computer claims it's on, but I see nor hear no indication. The only sound coming from my computer at this time would be what I believe to be the PSU fan. This happened last friday, and hasn't happened again til today.

It tends to happen most when I close/reopen my laptop. I have it set up so closing the laptop does nothing save for turn off the screen. Note, however, that it CAN happen when the laptop is open.

When this happens, when I try to restart what generally happens is the computer starts to boot, the processor fan turns on and then almost immediately turn off, and then...nothing. Never gets to BIOS, no POST, no anything. Just a black screen.

My assumption is that my processor fan needs to be reseated or plugged in...better. If there's a less "pain in the ***" solution, though, I'd like to hear it.

Event log finds nothing, by the way.

Thanks for your time in advance.

Its a bit suspicious that it goes off when you close the laptop. I know you say that this only affects the screen but I would double check the hibernate settings just to be sure cause that would explain what you are describing both with the screen is open and closed.

Otherwise might be damage to the connectors running up to the screen. This happened on one of my portables, screen open and mostly screen closed would lose any image, as in Black Screen.

Otherwise, random computer freezes well theres a load of reasons for those, could be anything. Sorry thats not very helpful.

Hook up an external monitor and have both displays working. I'm curious if the external also displays completely black.
