After deciding to purchase my wife a new desktop computer after her's was full of adware and malware, I have decided to take her old computer, put a new harddrive in it and make it straight Mandriva Linux machine as the only OS.
Now I have downloaded the Mandriva Linux OS but is the OS that you can run from a CD with out installing it the same one I will use to intall a fresh OS install?

I have read the Sticky post on Linux and have in fact run Mandriva from the CD to check it out. I love it and want to run a desk top with strictly this OS with no mention of MS Windows. :)

    Opinions please. :)

    Thanks in advance

    Hi

Not a bad choice, not the one I would have gone with as I prefer Ubuntu, but its a good Linux version you have chosen, you should have a "install mandriva" on the desktop of the live cd once loaded and that should install it on the HDD the (not used Mandriva for a while so not 100%) live cd should have the option if not then open a console window and type /usr/sbin/draklive-install

Personally I would go with Ubuntu HERE (clear instructions at the link on various installs)

Juts remember you get no compatability with any Windows application so none of the 3rd party applications will work, unless they have a Linux version, the likes of Office apps if you need that compatablity, SUN Open Office has a Linux version.

Pick Mandriva1 rather than Mandriva Free to install. (they are both free). Mandriva1 includes some drivers that are not open source, hence the name. It can save you some configuration problems if more drivers are included.
It's the middle download in the top line here http://www2.mandriva.com/downloads/

    i hear a mandriva install :-D

    have a nosy here

    http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/mandriva-2010.html

i've been a mandriva user for a few years now - best distro there is,

go for the 'one' version (not to be confused with mandriva 2010.1) as opposed to the 'free' version,
the free version is totally free - meaning free of cost, free to use and only open source software,
the one version is free of cost, free to use but comes with proprietary (closed source) drivers as well as open source,

there is an install icon on the desktop when you boot the live cd - easy and straight forward, just leave most things at default (obviously change the region and keyboard layout)

you will need 2 passwords - one for root and one for normal user,

first 'real' boot will add all the repositories, then you will need to update your system,
easy as there is an quick launch icon called 'configure your computer' on the left side of the panel,
click it, add the root password and click on update your computer,
all updates will be auto-checked so just click update,
you will be given a new kernel and will need to reboot to boot into the new kernel (it will use the new kernel by default)

once everything is ok, the old kernel can be removed

for all the restricted mandriva compatable packages - such as the microsoft closed source codecs and container formats, some ripping software, some transcoders, etc - you will need this

    http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/

all you need is the PLF (penguin liberation front) repositories added as the official mandriva ones were added at first boot,

glad you picked mandriva, started to think i was the only one

Halo - Thanks for the response. I have learned so much from you. I have tried Ubuntu and it's great, certainly not knocking it but to me (just my opinion) it's a Linux version that really wants to be MS Windows with out advertising it. Again this is just one man's opinion. :-D

Plodr - Thanks for the link. Only thing I am wanting to know is what is the difference between the Gnome and the KDE? Which one do you suggest and why?

Hawklord - Thanks for providing the great info, good stuff to know prior to installing that very well may have caused me some grief if I had not been informed. I will ask you the same question I asked Plodr, Gnome or KDE and why?
Not sure what you mean by this, could you clarify for someone who is pretty new to Linux but wants to learn as much as I can.

    Thanks again. :)

Welcome to Linux and prepare to be "wow-ed"! In addition to the above members, look for posts from BOOMM (Bored Out Of My Mind), as his insights and opinions have helped me tremendously!

While I lack the technical expertise of most of the responders, I can bring a "newbie perspective" they lack, as I have only been a linux user for less than a year now. I remember being where you are now, and asking the same questions!

First of all Mandriva is an excellent choice! I am an Ubuntu fan (10.04), but I also have Fedora, Mandriva, OpenSUSE, Mint, Debian, and some less popular distros loaded into VirtualBox VMs to "play" with. While I prefer Ubuntu, I can acknowledge the merits of other distros and understand why other's preferences differ from mine...and that's really ALL it is...difference in opinion.

    From a newbie's perspective, here's what I've learned, in simple layman's terms:

    1) linux distros are primarily divided into "RPM" and "Debian" distributions; just different ways of managing software packages and installation procedures; not sure of the differences, but people defend their opinion of choice vigorously; i'm not sure it matters...when you pick a distro, it is whatever it is and you're not gonna change it!

    2) linux desktops primarily consist of Gnome and/or KDE; there are numerous other smaller choices, such as XFCE, OpenBox, FluxBox, L, and other variants I'm probably not aware of, but Gnome and/or KDE are the big boys. Gnome seems to be the most popular, although KDE is a close second.

In general terms the Gnome desktop consists of a "suite" of packages, such as Nautilus for file management, Synaptic for package management, gedit for text editor, Rhythmbox for audio player, Totem for video player, etc...; likewise, the KDE "suite" consists of Dolphin for file management, kedit for text editor, Amarok for audio files, etc...; same situation with XFCE, etc... although I'm not as familiar with them.

Inasmuch as they're all desktop suites with similar software packages, it's primarily a matter of appearance. I would describe it like this: Gnome is the broadest-based user experience with a level of graphics you probably have experienced in WinXP, although with a much higher degree of customization & effects; KDE is the "cadillac" user experience with the most eye-candy, special effects, etc...; while XFCE is the "pinto" user experence you might compare to Win95 or 98. IMO, KDE is the nicest/prettiest, followed by Gnome, with XFCE bringing up the rear. However, they're ALL good choices...I'm not knocking ANY of them...simply trying to describe to a newbie in layman's terms. Here's the catch though...KDE is reputed to be the most sluggish/crash prone, with Gnome considered a good mix of performance/appearance, and XFCE considered VERY STABLE and highly recommended for older hardware systems with limited processing power.

Here's the bonus, regardless of what you use, you're NOT locked in! You can switch desktops, as long as your system can handle it; you can install KDE programs on a Gnome desktop and vice verse. I would suggest playing with some LiveCDs (or load into VMs) to decide which is right for YOU and your hardware. Mandriva and OpenSUSE have beautiful KDE desktops; I'm pretty fond of Ubuntu 10.04 and Mint 9 Gnome desktops; and Zenwalk is a pretty cool XFCE desktop. That should give you a pretty good cross-section of RPM vs Debian and desktop software suites and their graphics capabilities.

If you want to be "purely scientific", I'd suggest LiveCDs for Kubuntu, Ubuntu, & Xubuntu 10.04. As these are all the same distro, running on the same kernel, you will be able to isolate and quantify the difference in graphics ability and software packages quite easily. Then, you will KNOW which is right for you, and you will KNOW if you want to import another desktop's program into your desktop environment.

Although quite lengthy, this is a condensation of my acquired knowledge/opinions into a single post. I hope this is helpful to you, and GOOD LUCK making your selection(s)...have fun and enjoy the process, as there will not be a test, and there are no incorrect answers!

Enjoy Linux and to heck with M$!!!

Simple answer: Gnome resembles OSX and KDE resembles Windows because of the placement of the "taskbar".

    Hedon James,
Thanks for taking the time to put together a lengthy post on my behalf, you gave me much food for thought.
I read a very long blog on the difference between KDE and GNOME and my head almost exploded. (it was not pretty :) )

I will be installing on an older Compaq Presario as soon as I get a replacement HD for it.

So if I am reading your post correctly, I should not run into to many problems such as the Linux install recognizing things like my video card once I install the driver?

  9. Hedon James

    Hedon James Sergeant

    define "older"...

I have Ubuntu 10.04 on a Compaq Presario SR2010NX that is probably about 5+/- years old and it runs great on that hardware. If you're running "free" versions of software (pure open-source), brand new hardware is a little tricky until they develop appropriate drivers for that, and really old hardware is tricky, as they tend to drop development/support for the older hardware in favor of the new hardware. There seems to be a happy medium where most hardware works with Linux.

To answer your question, I don't think you'll have any problems with MandrivaOne due to the proprietary driver availability and support. But that's what a LiveCD is all about. Test it out and see what "hangs"...

I'm not trying to talk you out of Mandriva, but if you experience problems, another good distro that typically includes proprietary drivers & codecs is Mint, and Mint recently released a KDE version. There's a backup plan for you!

gnome and kde are just desktop environments, each have there own set of 'preferred' programs - but because its linux they can be used on other desktops (i use kde but i use braserio, which is a gnome burning program, instead of k3b)
to me, gnome looks more 'cartoonish' while kde looks more 'professional'

gnomes panel (taskbar, icon place - the thing that has the clock) can be moved to the usual bottom place if you wish,
kde's panel is already there, but both can be placed anywhere you wish,

just to be a pain - kedit is not in mandriva by default, its kwrite for the text editor,
also synaptic isn't the package manager, its urpmi for command line with a couple of drakes thrown in for ease (eg rpmdrake will open the add/remove programs) - but this is not important as it can all be done via gui (graphical user interface),

all drivers should be configured during install and first boot - takes the fun of apprehension away :-D

concerning PLF - mandriva is built and maintained in france and abides by the general laws,
for instance, some microsoft codecs and containers are not supported, so if you wanted to play, say, .wma files then you can't,
adding the PLF repo's allows access to restricted packages, so enabling win32-codecs allows you to play .wma files,

    quoted from the PLF site

I will try to not make your head explode...

If you have a very old low RAM machine, then another type of desktop may do better. Such as LXDE or Openbox. (Lubuntu) Both have plus and negative. I have a Linux Mint desktop with full bells and whistles including unstable Chrome and Firefox. My old laptop I have running Openbox as it consumes only 8% of the CPU and low memory usage. I had installed PCLinuxOS (Fedora Core based) on it Saturday and went back to what worked before and I have a stable Firefox running.

Video sometimes works and sometimes when you flip the switch for restricted drivers, it will not. ;)

ram is a good point, mdv2010.1 needs 1gb to be at ease,

how much ram is there ?

is it a desktop or laptop ?

i have a dell latitude with 512 ram running mdv2008.0, anything later struggles,

mdv2010.0 and .1 on my main machine (i triple boot with xp as well) with 3gb ram and 4gb swap,

    hope its not this old

Thanks again for all the replies.

This is a Compaq Presario SR2010NX (same as the one hedon james has) it came with 512 MB of RAM, but when the computer had MAJOR issues over a year ago and the wife said "HELP", I pulled the 512 out and put in 2 Gigs as well as a video card because I had gotten her a new 19 inch HP flat screen monitor for Christmas and the online video from the MOBO could not do much with the updated monitor.

Sounds based on your great advice Hawklord, I think I will be installing the KDE version. :-D

    Hedon James Sergeant

You are good to go bro'...DO IT!

Our machines are practically twins, as I also bumped my 512MB RAM to 2GB and created a 2GB swap drive when I loaded Linux. Runs better now than it ever did with Win.

Also, FWIW, my Compaq has an nVidia GE Force 6150 SE graphics card with 256MB RAM on board and it runs GREAT with Ubuntu 10.04; you can probably pull the video card to use in another machine (if you like?!) or leave it in and be BLOWN AWAY with Compiz and desktop effects. That Compaq is the perfect Linux candidate. I have had NO PROBLEMS whatsoever with mine. I can't imagine MandrivaOne will give you any problems, but if it does, I assure you that Ubuntu 10.04 runs WONDERFULLY on that machine.

Way to repurpose and breathe new life into old hardware! Load up MandrivaOne, you're going to be fine! Enjoy...and please let us know how things turn out for you!

Installation issue of "Live CD" for Mandriva 2010.1.

I burned the KDE version image to CD, set bios to boot to CD, I get the Mandriva screen, and it starts to boot from CD.
I then get the text on the screen: "Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 176896.

I then get the Mandriva screen back up and hit Esc to view Verbose mode so that I can see the boot up processes. I see "OK" to all of them, then I get a black screen that does not go away. Have to power down using the power button.

Any suggestions? Should I burn another ISO because this one may have gotten corrupted in the burn process?

As always, thank you for your help. :)

So know one has to answer the question I posted at the bottom of my last post, I went ahead and re-burned the image to a new CD and the same thing happened, so that eliminates that theory. Unless the ISO file it's self is corrupted? Maybe I will go ahead and re-download the ISO and try again.

i live in england - different time zones and all that,

Buffer I/O error on device sr0,

this could be a faulty 'install' machine cd/dvd drive, faulty 'burning' machine cd/dvd drive or a bad couple of cd's

try the disk in another machine - if it works then your 'install' machines drive is a bit faulty

if it still throws the error then the 'burning' machines drive is a bit faulty OR you have a bad disk

but as you seem to have solved the problem - then its old news,

my guess is a bad couple of cd's, as you have the gnome version working

    sr0 is your cd/dvd drive

  22. ichase

Good thinking and utilizing process of elimination. I will try the KDE disk on another computer and see if I can get it to work.

Did notice on the GNOME version that it would not read my external HD. Kept getting an error which was on another machine at work so the exact error quoted is not coming to mind.

    On ward and upward. :)

Figured I would just continue on with this post. So, instead of installing on the Compaq, I installed on a new build with older but new hardware.
AMD Athlon 64, with 2 GIGs of RAM, and 2 80 GB HDs. Not breaking any speed records and this computer has one purpose in life. To be my class room. I am using strictly for learning.
So I have done this so far; installed Win XP Pro, using EASEUS Partition Manager (Which is still free until the end of today) I partitioned the Master to 20 GB for the Windows OS and the remaining is for my Linux Mandriva. Partitioned the other 80 GB HD down the middle for independent storage for each OS. So far, everything is working great, I am able to duel boot to either OS.
    Now, here comes the questions.
    1. My wireless card gets 5 bars 87% - 92% in Windows (to be expected, router is upstairs) In Linux, I get 1 bar with only 15% Barely enough to keep a good internet connection. Could someone shed some light on what would be causing the decrease in wireless reception in Linux?
    2. As a life long Windows user, of course like everyone, I am used to the ol' .exe files when installing software. Click, sit back and windows does the rest. I see Linux is NOTHING like this, which is fine, I would just like some guidance on how to install software and where to find good software to download as I like to try getting a good email program, substiture FF with Pale Moon etc. I have read this thread http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=110558 but to be honest, it's greek to me.
For the brand new, just installed, just learned how to SPELL linux user, is there some guidance I can go to that will have me running linux ALMOST as smoothly as I was operating in Windows. :)
Thanks ahead of time for all of your help.

Hello iChase, let me try to answer your questions.

First of all, you have it installed and it dual-boots. This is half the battle. Yay!

Goldfish is giving directions for a Debian system using sudo (super user do)

Your Mandriva is Fedora core and so the answer may need help from other Fedora/Mandriva users. I think the answers may be found in This page

1- Wireless card- who is the manufacturer? There are some restricted (non open-source) drivers that help wireless.
    Tech page on Fedora networking

    2- Browser like Pale Moon?

    i'm a mandriva user,

mandriva has nothing to do with fedora - apart from they both use rpm's,

drakrpm or rpmdrake need to be run from a terminal, your root password will be needed as well,

you need to configure your repositories first though,

my guess is you have mdv2010.1,
if your menu is still in classic mode its

menu > tools > system tools > configure your computer,

a box will come up for your root password,

when its open click 'configure media sources for install and update'

main, main updates, contrib, non-free and non-free updates should be checked,
    click ok (bottom right)

now click 'update your system', install all updates by using the update button (bottom right again)

there is a good chance you will get a new kernel which will be added to your grub boot menu,
the new kernel will be the one you boot by default, the old one can be uninstalled once you are comfortable that your system is ok (i usually leave it about a week before removing it)

once you are happy and your system is fully up-to-date, then you need to add the restricted repositories,
luckily this is quite easy and virtually automated

    use this link http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/

click on the 'add plf medias' radio button, add your root password when prompted - and let it do its thing (assuming you have mdv2010.1)

now this bit is the really easy bit,
open a terminal and type su - press enter,
type your root password (nothing will be seen in the terminal window) - press enter
    type urpmi --auto-update,
type y to install all available updates and press enter
once its finished type exit - press enter
    type reboot - press enter

    done

now you can use drakrpm or rpmdrake from a terminal to open your add/remove software with a fully updated list,
make sure all and all are selected from the 2 drop down menus at top left then just use the search option to find the software you want by name or browse the categories on the left,
put a tick in the software you want, click apply (bottom right) and ok any prompts,

    easy once you know how

To answer your question BOoMM the wireless card is an Encore Electronics 802.11g Wireless PCI Adapter model number ENLWI-G2
Now, should I swap this card out with let's say a Linksys model?
I am obviously going to have to get this part fixed first before doing anything because the internet connection normally drops due to the fact that it receives such a weak signal. Which kind of makes updating impossible.
Hence the reason I am on the Win XP replying. :)

Looks like I have some reading to do. When you say open a terminal hawklord, is that the same thing as "Run" in a windows environment? And yes, it is mdv2010.1 KDE

There are reports of success getting that Wireless to work with ndiswrapper. (uses the Windows drivers and installs them in Linux is the simple analogy of what that means). ;)

hawklord can help more in depth as I have not used KDE for about 4 years. :-o

The terminal is called "konsole" in KDE :major

  30. hawklord

    hawklord Master Sergeant

ok, terminal is the console, konsole - same as cmd in windows, only with different commands,

best bet here is instead of using the terminal when you need to be root, i'll guide you through kde and the GUI,
being root can mess up your system good style (never done it, honest:-D)

ok, do you have an ethernet cable to connect mandriva to your router ?
as, if you need ndiswrapper then it has to be downloaded and installed

with the wireless, there maybe drivers in the repositories for it,
using an ethernet cable will allow you to update your system with all available software

i also want you to download sudo as well, on mandriva and similar systems sudo is not installed by default,
this will give you root access for one command only, once configured - so a lot safer

to be honest, i havn't worked with wireless for some time as my pc is wired, so you will have to bear with me as i get up to speed,
my lappy is wireless but i updated it via ethernet and acquired the drivers that way,

but to start off - can you open a terminal and type

lspci (ell ess pee cee eye)

    press enter

highlight and copy the output and wrap it in code so i can see it

Easy enough. Have actually learned quite a bit on youtube today. Many tutorials that walk you through the installing of software etc. Have you seen the Linux videos from "Nixie Pixie" ? Oh my, if you have not seen this woman, it's worth getting yourself a tuturial. :)

So, by going hard wire with ethernet, getting all of the updates, I could essentially fix my wireless problem? I guess it makes sense that Linux is not going to use the Windows driver so my wireless card is running with out a driver until I do all of the updates? Is this correct?

  34. hawklord

    hawklord Master Sergeant

that depends on the outcome of the update and the output i need from lspci,

linux has its own drivers, but ndiswrapper allows you to use certain windows wireless drivers,
the difference is that linux uses the chipset not the whole card, so one driver fits a range of cards

the output from lspci should show your wireless card, i can then have a nosy which one you need

Well as I type this, my linux rig is upstairs connected directly to the router via ethernet and it's downloading and updating 646 updates. Last time I looked it was on 165 so I think it will be up there for a while. A message popped up stating there is a new version of Mandriva One, I will look into upgrading that later.
Until then, once I get all of the updates loaded I will follow your instructions and get you the lspci you requested. :)

Once I do this you said to wrap it in code? What do you mean by that and how do I do it. I will also probably need some assistance DL Sudo. Will this be in the respository in the add/delete programs?

oh - doing a quick check, i believe you need the rtl8180 driver, you seem to have a realtek chipset on your card, lspci will confirm or deny this,

you seem to have mdv2010 as well, not 2010.1

ok, i'll need to find the right driver and whether its in your kernel,

but time is cracking on here, i'll be back tomorrow,

oh - your 3d will be awesome with that vid card - i have a geforce 7500le

Just another question, should be easy. When I configured my desktop wallpaper and saved it was good to go and the image I used became my new desktop wallpaper. UNTIL I rebooted and it went back to the Mandriva Linux backround? Is that normal?

  40. hawklord

    hawklord Master Sergeant

    ok,

1st - depends on how you did your wallpaper - easiest way is right click on your desktop > desktop settings,
your wallpaper is in there, you can also browse to another jpg and add it as your desktop image - but, if you delete the image or move it then your desktop will revert back,

2nd - wireless, alls looking good - type drakconnect in a terminal and press enter, add your root password to the prompt,
now in there you should see your wireless card - all you need to do is configure your mandriva to connect to your router/access point,

    Good Morning Hawklord,
As far as the desktop goes, that is exactly how I did it. Utilized the Desktop Settings Plasma Workspace, Appearance and changed the Wall Paper as well as the desktop theme. My entire time, the backround stayed as I set it with a .jpg file. (looked awesome by the way while using the Oxygen theme)
But when I re-booted, it defaulted back to the Mandriva desktop.

The wireless sounds pretty easy. I actually asked the Encore Electronics guys if they had a driver for that card and this was their response.

But if the drakconnect works in the terminal that will be great. I'm kinda stuck having to use wireless due to the fact that I do not have a dedicated router downstairs to connect to. You should have seen it last night. I had the computer in a chair, with the mouse and keyboard on top of it, with the monitor sitting on the edge of my wife's desk. LOL

On another note, I went to add programs and typed in Sudo and nothing but Suduko came up? I figured certainly it would have been in the repositories. Maybe I did not download them correctly??

    morning ??? - its 8pm here,

i'm in a different system at the moment (i dual boot), but as soon as i finish what i'm doing i'll boot into mdv

sudo = you need to make sure that 'all' and 'all' are selected from the 2 drop down boxes at just under top left,

do you know how the repositories work ?

  43. ichase

    ichase Corporal

Ok with that I say, Good Evening :) Hope your day has been a good one so far. I will try the "all" and "all"

To answer your question, no. I do not completely understand how the repositories work. I think I understand it to be like a big database of Linux software where is unlike windows where you need to go find different web sites to download software, Linux has a database chock full of them and goes out and finds the software for you and allows you to DL and Install pretty much similtanously.

Like I said, this is just what I think it is based on my understanding of what I have read.

Unfortunantly, the only thing using drakconnect allows for is configuring your wired network, not your wireless. :(

  44. hawklord

    hawklord Master Sergeant

yes - thats pretty much it,

do you have the options in my piccy ?

Another problem I am having is, I am being told that a package needs to be installed. A window pops up with multiple packages with an info button next to it. Each one says no info. I can't do anything in add programs and when I select the radio button for any of the packages, and hit ok, the window disapears for about 2 seconds and re-appears. I can't do anything. I have tried rebooting and that has not helped either.
The package looks something like this: kde-l10n-cs-4.3.5-1.1mdv2010.0.noarch. Each one lthe third section is different. Like the one above is "cs" the next is "la", "eu", "ga", "gu" etc. Now if I click OK about 20 + times it finally goes away.

Ok, selected "all" and "all" and found "Sudo" when I tried to load it, I got a problem during installation window.
This is what was in the window
    Code:
    1 installation transactions failed

There was a problem during the installation:

    now type

    urpmi --auto-update

type y at any prompts in the terminal,

if its not then don't bother,

just let me know if you have the piccy stuff

auto updated, everything ran good. Ran drakconnect again, only option I get is Wired Internet. (ethernet)
That answers your other question, Yes. I do have an internet connection which did change from 15% to 18% (still one bar yes) after I did the updates last night?? Wierd.

not a fix for your wireless - but just a test,

try changing encryption to wep in your router, see what happens,
also add your wireless card mac address permanently to your router and assign it a static ip,

on my lappy this solved problems,

for drakconnect - try this, open a terminal and type drakconf, press enter,
add your root password to the prompt

(on the left) network and internet > set up a new network interface
now you should see 9 options - if you don't you may have a dodgy install,
just click 'cancel' (bottom left) and X out

    X out of the terminal

as for your 'error' those are local language files for kde, i guess you are in america, click the one for the usa, en_US (if its there),

if not then that ones beyond me, sorry
