    :confused

Greetings Forum (been a long time)

Anyway, just completed a fresh install of Win XP Pro, 1st time on this machine, (no upgrades or anything, just wanted to clean this guy up & start clean)

Now for the last day & 1/2, just been trying to get drivers. I still have some missing per one of those "Missing/update your driver programs".

I found one that was called Driver Maxx? It was the only one that I could find that was free of charge, but limited to only 2 downloads per day. :(
Is there a more popular or recommended option to use to read my system and display missing drivers? I "Deleted" the driver maxx, because as I was looking around the internet, i found that it may have spyware/malware attached to it? So now I don't know how to continue safely.

At first I had Yellow marks everywhere in my device manager list. Now I only have one under "audio".

I have tried to use the "update driver" option, straight from the "properties" menu of the device manager, but always - it cant update.

Now I am getting frustrated knowing that I have all of these drivers that need updating or even installed! Everything appears to be running ok.
    But...

    • At each start up after reboot, computer does not start up like normal. It goes into somekind of bios screen that requires me to hit F2 to start
    • and my video display is not looking like it should be
at one point it was stuck at 4 bit, with a whacked out display?
With a rollback to a "last good known working mode" ??? or something like that, I was able to correct that, somewhat.

Now I am contacting you great guys & gals for some assistance.

Thanks, I sure do appreciate this forum! :wave

    Hi

Sadly those driver finder apps for me anyways cause more issues that enough for PC users, as they cannot find the actual driver you need they more often thatn not find a generic one that may not work as many OEMs specify custom chips for their PCs.

As for your PC if the only device missing is the Audio and you have installed the Chipset already is the driver for Audio HERE

    Wow, :clap:clap

Such a speedy reply - Thank you, Thank You!

That driver link was the one & now the yellow mark is gone! Yay.

But my concern is still this:

When I had one of those driver finders loaded it said many drivers are out of date!

So that leads me to a question:
    • If there are NO Yellow marks in device manager, leave it alone?
    • Should we accept the old agage: "if it aint broke, don't fix it"

I wrote those devices down with the out of date drivers,so I could look them up, most of the common ones I was able to find & update like: Belkin, Nvidia, etc.

But the following I am at a loss, can you assist with info? Do I keep searching, can you provide Or ... just leave it alone, since now, all appears ok?
Here's what I wrote down, that had RED marks:
    System Devices
    Intel(R) 82801EB SMBus Controller - 24D3 5.1.2600.5512 9.2.3.1003
    Intel(R) 82865G/PE/P/GV/82848P Processor to I/O Controller - 2570 5.1.2600.5512 9.2.3.1003
    Intel(R) 82865G/PE/P/GV/82848P Processor to AGP Controller - 2571 5.1.2600.5512 9.2.3.1003
    Intel(R) 82801 PCI Bridge - 244E 5.1.2600.2180 9.1.1.1014
    Intel(R) 82801EB LPC Interface Controller - 24D0 5.1.2600.5512 9.2.3.1003
(I think the #'s at the end of each line represent my current driver version followed by what they think is the newest. My versions start with 5.* and the new versions are 9.*

    Then...
    Universal Serial Bus Controllers:
    Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24D2 5.1.2600.2180 9.1.1.1020
same description on the following except after the - (dash)
    • 24D4
    • 24D7
    • 24DE
    • 24DD

Should I still be concerned & try to update?

    Hi

Yes as their are no yellow ! marks in Device Manager I would leave alone, especially if your PC is working OK.

These driver finder apps find drivers for my PC and I know for a fact there are no updates at all, they find generic ones and in part I feel its to scare you into buying said applications Pro version or to allow you to download the driver fix, but in MANY cases I have found that using these applications can break perfectly working drivers, especially the audio driver.

OHHHHH yes, do accept that adage as its a techies #1 rule.

If you have RED makes by the likes of the SMBUS and ONLY in Windows Device Manager then thats the Chipset driver thats missing or corrupt, the other listings are also part of the chipset, the Chipset controls your motherboard and the hardware it has on it like the Northbridge/Southbridge, USB controllers, Network Controller, SATA/IDE controllers, etc

If you have those drivers listing in Device Manager as RED then install the Chipset Driver from HERE and reboot (do reboot as its important as the Chipset only really installs properly after a reboot).

BUT if its the driver finder app that is listing this ignore it as your Chipset will be fine, many not be a version newer but in many cases the Chipset doesnt add much to the Chipset you have but could do for another from the same series, so basically leave alone and enjoy your PC :)

    Thanks yet once again!

My device manager is free of ANY marks - yellow or red!!!

It's the driver finder app, that is telling me I have out of date drivers with the red check mark next to the device on their list.

So I will take your advice & accept the adage that techies acknowledge as well: "If it aint broke, don't fix it".
So... I guess I'm a techie now... :cool

Everything appears to be just humming along!

Thanks & have a pleasant weekend.

    Hi

I personally wouldnt trust the driver finder app at all as they mention mine are out of date, when they are not, but in many cases all they do in say the area of Chipset driver is to look for the name Intel and the version of Chipset, then if yours is not that version they say your out of date, when in reality you are not as the later versions of the Chipset just add compatability for newer Chipsets and CPUs, and if you have not changed Motherboard or CPU then you are fine,

I'm not personally impressed at this scare tactic and in most cases these apps want you to buy them so you can get an update you may never need or may actually break a good working driver.

I tend to install the current Chipset for my motherboard when I have just installed Windows and then thats it that driver never gets updated, the only drivers I tend to update are Graphics Card (if its a 3rd party add on card and not an onboard graphics card) and Network drivers, tend to update the network ones when Windows update tells me I have one as thats the ONLY driver I will update via Windows update, I do not install any of the others it lists (just hid them).

Great on all humming along and have a great weekend yourself and thanks for a great post as the message of you dont always need to update your drivers if your PC is working fine is one thats needed to be gotten out there :) Well I'd say your a techie as your posts are clear and have the info needed to get a grip of the issue at hand, many do not post the level of information you did so its harder to assess the issue.
