actually, i've always liked Friday the 13th. anyone know where the Friday the 13th "bad luck" idea came from? i'd always thought it was associated with October 13, 1307.

    paraphrased from wikipedia:

apparently, i've been wrong all these years. there's no evidence of the superstition before the 19th century (1800s). info here:

new word for my vocabulary & in case it ever comes up in a New York Times Sunday crossword: paraskevidekatriaphobia (pahr ahss keh vee deh kuh tree uh foh bee uh). Cool! i only knew triskaidekaphobia (triss kuh deh kuh foh bee uh). the former is fear of Friday the 13th; the latter is fear of the number 13.

My daughter loves Friday the 13th, she passed her driving test on it, she met her boyfriend on it, and passed her degree in socialogy in youth work on it and her boyfriends birthday is on the 13th, so she dosen't have no fear of it ! ;)

I thought the crap that started this was Jesus and the last supper and some overly imaginative jerk. Let's not let a black cat run in front of us while we're avoiding the joints in the sidewalks.rolleyes:-D Oh, walking under a ladder is not a sign of bad luck to come, just a lack of good judgment. Sooner or later, you will be covered or hit by something falling off the darn thing.roflmao Self-fulfilling prophecy.;)

Awe, Augie, you aren't superstitious? :eek I am ! :-D Now, if I walked under that ladder, and it fell on me, I would be :cry Ah, being part Irish, I am superstitious tho.... Call it what you want, but NO black cats here, and NO ladders either!! roflmao roflmao

Maybe it was Friday the 13th in other parts of the world yesterday! roflmao :-D

No one is really superstitious in my family cept my one Grandma. Only thing I know is the broken glass(mirror) and the cat cross your path while driving she go around the block instead. As a kid I didn't know what the heck she was doing till I got older. :)

Dude, we've had 3 Friday the 13ths this year.
No-one in my family is superstitious, but I crossed the path of a black cat last week, and one of my chickens got eaten that night. I found the cat that ate it, threw a brick at it... it was white.

I am not superstitious (crosses fingers behind back)

Black cat crossing the path, what do the owners of black cats do ?

Walking under ladders, just look up.

Stepping on the cracks, stay on the asphalt, (watch for the cars)

In numerology, the number twelve is considered the number of completeness, as reflected in the twelve months of the year, twelve signs of the zodiac, twelve hours of the clock, twelve tribes of Israel, twelve Apostles of Jesus, twelve gods of Olympus, etc., whereas the number thirteen was considered irregular, transgressing this completeness. There is also a superstition, thought by some to derive from the Last Supper or a Norse myth, that having thirteen people seated at a table will result in the death of one of the diners.

Another i heard was that a witches coven consists of 13 there bye invoking the devil.

i always think the "no 13th floor/room/seat/row is silly...unless you suffer from triskaidekaphobia. it's still the 13th whatever, it's just CALLED the 14th.

reminds me of an email i got in my former professional life from a construction company owner complaining about something we rented him that he didn't want to pay for. "oscillating uncontrollably about the axes" for his reason. what he actually meant was: "it was jumping up and down." i responded with that info and told him to stick it in a bucket of water to clean out the mud clog he sucked up with it.

i think that sort of thing is called obfuscation, to use a $2.00 word. i think he was trying to show off to/confuse what he thought was "just a dumb ole girl." didn't work; i made him pay for the rental.
