Friend's laptop

    My friend's laptop screen starts up ok then goes very dim.
    He has an IBM Thinkpad 600E (old but it was free). Any help would be much appreciated.

    I have looked into the power management. Everything is fine. But if it is th bulb then wouldn't the initial setup screen be dim too? Because I can see that perfectly. It's when we begin loading XP that it goes dim.
