From tape recorder to file?

I'm trying to get the audio I record in class into a file so I can burn it to a CD. I have a small cassette recorder I take to class.
I have a cord that goes from the "phono" output on the cassette recorder to "mic" on the computer. I even tried downloading Audacity for windows, and it seems to be "hearing" what is coming off the recorder. I save the projuect as a .wav file and then try to play with windows media player. It won't even find it. I got it to load into iTunes but it won't play it, and the files Audacity saves are a bunch of 10 sec long ones. So having traveled to the far reaches of my knowledge, (You'll notice that wasn't a long trip!!) I'm lost.

OK that's what I want to do and what Ive tried. I'm running windows XP w/ SP2. I have BurnOnCDDVD to get it to the CD. Is there any hope at all?

sounds like you need dbpoweramp + the auxillary input.

just d/l poweramp and the auxillary input, there probably will be a tutorial, sounds like your more than halfway there if you can hear it already, most times people have to fiddle with their input settings, now that I mention it, you might have to too, since you will be recording instead of just playback.

right click speaker icon in system tray, lower right of screen. select open volume control>options>properties> then ajdust volume for recording> then check your appropriate device, you can check them all and them systematically mute them to find the right one. just play the device and fiddle with the settings and volume until you can hear it.

Its all gravy from there, you just open power amp + the auxillary input, adjust your volume settings, and record.
This is really fun, too, because you can do your tape collection, lp's, etc...
